• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I gave my life to Christ 7 months ago. I realized that it's not much support for people struggling with sexual desires.
I realize that I don't have a desire to date men. I've been single for three years because of it.

Can God take away these desires? I've been struggling with these desires for ten years now.

I believe God can take away the desires, but I don't think he always does so. I'm glad you posted here. I can relate a lot to what you have shared in this little bit.

I don't know why we go through the struggles of the feelings, but they are just that - feelings. Behaviors are the problems. He gives us strength to make good choices and to stay away from same sex relationships.

Do you have any support system?

A book that I found helpful was Out of Egypt by Jeannette.... can't remember the last name. I got it through Focus on the Family.

God can, but most often doesn't. Most often change is a process, a journey and Jesus walk through those times with you.

Were you always aware of same sex attraction, or has there been some experience(s) that set you off in that direction?

God can do anything, but if you don't have desires that is not a bad thing, God does call some to celibacy and it is perfectly honorable, Paul describe it as a gift. If you have desires that are directed at the wrong sex then that is something you are going to need to continue to work through and it would be good to find someone to help you talk through this stuff

Thanks a lot for replying. I don't have a support system. I don't have anyone to speak to about it. I'm always around christians with homophobia. I tried to find support groups that are biblical base but I've found nothing. I will research that book.

Honestly, I felt out of no where I became sexually attracted to a female friend when I was 13. I thought nothing much of it and moved on. At age 19, I was exposed to pornagraphy that reopened those desires. Over the years the desires got stronger. I had a huge struggle with it since.

Unfortunately, that is true many times. When I went to my pastor to talk about starting a support group for those who were choosing not to live the homosexual lifestyle, he said the church wasn't ready for it and I probably shouldn't be discussing it. Well... who else is going to be there besides the church? I can totally understand your experience.

I think that's the benefit of being here - it's okay to talk about it here, and there is a support network here. There will always be someone who disagrees, but overall this is a safe place.

I know many people who overcome homosexuality. I think God does take it away. I believe just as you slowly worked into these thoughts and feeling, it takes time to learn how to work your way out! <edit>

Keep surrendering it to God and ask Him to deliver you and believe you can overcome it through Him. Also read books and listen to edifying preaching regarding the subject in particular. Each time you find yourself fantasizing and/or feeling weak for it, turn to God, ask His help, recite a Bible verse, etc. You are not alone.

Be strong, sister! I am glad you come to know God and you want to do the right thing for Him!

It's not going to be easy, but God wants the best for you. I failed God once, but I learned valuable lessons from it. He used my failures to bring me closer to Him and to understand His infinite love. All I can say now is that God is soooo gooood to me! I don't know what's ahead of me, but I know I want to stay close to God and fully rely on the blood of Christ to overcome whatever I'll have to face in the future.

If He can work in me, He can also work in you! We can support each other in this heavenly journey. Faith on!
