  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Ahhh.....?????????????maybe you should reread my post again??????????...I simply asked if you had the same problems America has......I'm not sure how you could read anymore than that into it. Ahhh don't be sorry for anything thats happening in our country, trust me we have brought it on ourselves. was just asking if the blight had reached your neck of the woods.......and actually I'm very calm....lol thanks:)

Oh I'm sorry, I think I just misinterpreted it quite heavily. :D LOL I thought you were pretty much telling me that I should quit bragging because we're some posh small country somewhere with probably no problems to talk about, when the rest of the world needs to suffer or something... :sorry:

But yeah, there's been a few school shootings here as well and they caused - obviously - a lot of fuss and self reflection time for the schools; now I believe they're working on some gaps in the mental health care system since both of those people had apparently been searching help with some of their problems and not gotten any... Also, mainly in the Helsinki region, some public schools have become a bit ghetto-ish - like there's lots of foreign people who don't really speak Finnish and then start making trouble LOL. But that's about it, I believe generally schools are still quite safe and people trust the educational system quite well. :)

Good to hear!.....I'm usually sarcastic so its easy to see how you could of misread my post. I think America is going to collapse economically so I'm always looking for a better country to escape to when it hits the fan, I always heard Finland was beautiful....cold but beautiful...lol

lorain - my sister had a second grade teacher in the public school system that couldn't spell supper correctly. She spelled it super. I also have a cousin who has a Masters in Special Ed who relies heavily on spell check b/c her spelling is horrible.

So, I don't think having poor grammar is limited to homeschooling parents. :)

Were you homeschooled?
Yes, I was homeschooled. I actually never went to school.
Did you like it?
I did like it for all the freedom, but that wasn't always a good thing.
Why/why not?
Okay so, the parts I don't like most about homeschooling is... Very hard to make friends, since my parents didn't go to church. We had church at home.
Also it made me a shy person in public. I have a hard time talking to other people, like carrying on a conversation. I will put on a friendly front, and joke around a bit, but inside I am soooo nervous, and shy. That could vary from kid to kid though.
Would you homeschool your kids? Why/why not?
I don't know yet. Public schools are getting worse all the time (from what I hear). I wouldn't want my kids to have all that pressure, and be influenced into doing bad things.

I went to a public school. . . there are two things about public schools that you have to understand.

The first is you have to know where you are at. If you are sending your kid to a school with a bunch of inner city kids who are more likely to get arrested in a year then earn a single A. . . then yeah your child isn't going to get that great of an education.

But if you are in a safe area and a fairly safe school then typically the public school system is really what you make of it.

Public schools have to take everyone, no matter if the person and/or his parents care about their education or not. So their test scores are never going to be able to compete with private schools or homeschooled kids. Because since you are paying private school kids usually have parents who care more about education and home school is very similar in that respect. (Plus private schools can turn kids down if they feel the kid will bring them down.)

So long as you have a fairly good security knowing that the school is safe and that troublemakers are delt with properly, a public school is really what you make of it. If the kid is honestly encouraged at home and wants to go in there and get an education, in most public schools he/she will get that education and get good test scores.

But you can't say that homeschooling or private schooling is better because of test scores and other things. Because a public school HAS to take EVERYONE and so the people who don't care are always going to bring down the average. Comming out of a public school I had the grades and the test scores to get into just about any college in the country with the exception of maybe the most highly selective schools. And in fact I did get into and go to a private university which while not highly selective was far more selective then most public universities.

Either can have a poor instructor in some capacity, but you can count on homeschooling NOT

having much in the way of cultural diversity or uniform policies, or any of the social experience

that all people need to successfully intergrate in a world economy like we have today.

MHO is we nee to ADD to the public expereince at home, but do not take it from our children
entirely.

I was homeschooled and I hated it. It destroyed me. I always felt so different and unliked and if I wasn't unliked, I worried to no end that I was. I was homeschooled from the 4th grade until graduating from highschool. I am now 29 years old and feel incredibly awkward around people and feel on the verge of losing friends in fear of what they might think of me. Most of my friends don't even know I was homeschooled. My ex-fiance didn't even know where I attended school until she found out from my parents. Homeschooling me was the most selfish decision my parents ever made for my life. It was all to allow my father to drag his family across the country to do his "job" as a traveling salesman of of the gospel. Homeschooling permanantly damaged me for life.

Is the education superior to public schools? Absolutely. But was it worth turning me into a social failure. No.

Homeschooling may be the right thing for some children, but it depends on the child. My two siblings turned out fine and don't face the struggles I do. Good for them. But it's a fatal upbringing for many children.

I wasn't home schooled, but a family that I knew, she home schooled her daughters.

No, I would not, but I would take it upon myself to teach my kids how to read and write at an early age. Plus, from the people I have met personally (not saying this about everyone), they seem more socially awkward, and unknowing of the world around them.
