once you were a child
a young boy
would you run with your friends
did you play
cowboys and indians
did you’re parents love you
take you to amusment parks
cheer at soccer games?
now you’re beggin for my change

have you been in love
held a woman in your arms
breathed her scent
made it your oxygen?
have you married?
did you have children?
do you wonder where
they are now?
have you met their wives
and husbands
do they have children of
their own?
are you a grandfather?
you can have my change
and a few dollars more

what path led you here
did you fight in a war
battle along side boys
and men
down in the trenches
did you country abandon you
when you came home
like so many out here with you

will work for food or money
with holes in your shoes
and a shopping cart of cans
