I just spoke a little while ago with an orthodox monk living in a hermitage not far from my home. He lived as a monk in Palestine for many years. Since I am an inquirer, I asked many questions and tried to write down the best I could his answers. Granted, this man is what some would call a "traditionalist", but his answers were always humble and gracious.

I asked him about Holy Fire, and he said that he had been present during Pascha many times. He said he does not doubt that miracles do happen during the ceremony of the Holy Fire. However, he also said this: he was told by those involved in the preparation of the ceremony, that at eleven o'clock the night before, a silver chalise with perforation is carried into the tomb containing the necessary tools for fire. The monk I spoke with was told (paraphrase) "We make certain the Holy Fire appears."

I am just reporting what I was told.

Maybe I'm gullible, but this doesn't ring true. The tomb is inspected and sealed before the ceremony. How could such a chalice be overlooked? Nor does it explain how the fire darts all over the church. You can clearly see it doing so in the video that is available on the net.

Unless of course there are reasons to "make sure" the Holy Fire comes. Who's to say that there aren't more involved in "making sure" other than the Patriarchs that enter the tomb? Anyway, it could be that the fire is the chalice is there as a "backup plan." Perhaps it is not needed. However, this monk I spoke with is sure that miracles do happen during the ceremony.

Osel, I just have to say your mood icon is toooo funny! I can't keep up with how fast he moves...
LOL

I also want to say that I have read and re-read what tizziale had to say about the conversation with the monk. Obviously, I wasn't there to hear it. And I don't want to cast aspersions anywhere. But I find it interesting that the person tizziale spoke to did not provide any other source of information regarding the silver chalice etc. One would think, that if this single monk knows "about it", then others must also, and the word must be "out" somewhere...yet it isn't. Conspiracies of this nature are extremely difficult to maintain for the short term, much less over a thousand years....
Odd.
