Well, I guess it's official.  Sean Penn has announced that there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.  So I guess the inspectors can now pack their bags and go home.  Mr. Penn has just helped save the world.

I'm so glad.  Now I can sleep better at night knowing that.

Thanks, Sean, for helping make the world a safer place.  You and Babs should run for office.  Or maybe just run.  Far away.

Don't tell me that there is a country somewhere building weapons of mass destruction !!
Shock !
Horror !
Let's hope it is not the UK or the US of A, selling all these arms and weapons to support people like Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden, then having to chase after them and kill innocent people in the process.....but all in the name of justice of course.

Did someone mention double standards by any chance

Tread carefully dnich.  There are a lot of veterans from the US on this board who have been through some hard stuff, and I respect them greatly for it.

For as many bad things as people from other countries can throw at the US, the US does many good things also.

Um, well the USa might be a nation, developing weapons of mass destruction? Perhaps, China, india, PAkistan and Russia are such nations, too? Thinking of it, Japan, Persia, Korea, seveal European countries have joined the fold already...
Hm, guess outlawing of anti personel land mines doesn´t come good wit USA either, after all USa doesn´t want to hurt their economy as one of the biggest sellers of those things. And much money can be made of course after the petty little wars are over for mine removement equipment. Which brins more money into the pockets...
Oh and it´s all fine and dandy to allow nations to use chemical weapons in wars, but as soon as those nations are not so useful anymore slap them around for having them...

Hello blind faith,
I know a few veterans of the war in the Gulf and also of the Falklands war. I happened to be in Thailand in 67 when the Vietnam war was going on and met a few American soldiers there.

My respect for all these people is not changed or diminished because I question the validity of countries; however powerful they are, producing weapons of mass destruction which are very often used against them in war.

I think you must separate the personalities from the principal here.

Also the reality is that all these wars have not stopped further wars taking place, so therefore there must be something wrong with the approach of humanity to itself.

dnich163,

What kind of a world do you think it would be if the US did not have weapons of mass destruction to stop the nazis in europe? Or the Japanese? Or the soviet empire? I am curious as to how you would see the world today if the US had built a wall and ignored the world around it.

..... but I digress, this thread is about our man Penn in Iraq.

Hi Michael 0701,

To think of a world without weapons of mass destruction is only dreaming now.
My point is that it is double standards to have the UK and US assume that they are the only two countries who can determine what goes on in other peoples back yard, and that they have sole right to determine who is or is not a threat to world peace.

The double standards mean that companies from both our countries export guns, ammo, planes, tanks and technical information to support countries and people who serve "our" interests.

Remember that it was the US and the UK goverment that supplied Osama Bin Laden with the capability to fight against the USSR.
Now the USSR is our ally against Bin Laden, and in order for us to have Russia (to give it it's proper name now) support us, we agree to them killing innocent women and children in Chechnya.

I spoke recently to an aid worker who just returned from Chechnya. In the village next to where she was staying, a group of Russian soldiers repeatedly raped a woman and her 8 year old daughter.

The child was left not being able to speak because of the trauma.

In about twenty years time, when a relative of this little girl walks into some cinema with a bomb strapped to her waist and blow's the place and the people up, I wonder if the newscaster will talk about what was in her past that led her to do this?

We have to be careful with the power we have.

That's all folks

...although you missed instruments of torture off your list. Our so-called civilised countries are great at exporting electric cattle prods & the like to known oppressive regimes. Perhaps we think they have problems herding their cattle...

And just for the record, two wrongs never make a right; and the ends do not justify the means.

WWJD? He certainly never raised up an army to overthrow the mad, power crazy dictator & his occupying army...

Just a thought.
