• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

A random question...
I know that lack of food affects concentration & learning & retention of info, etc...
but do those problems remain even after you have more or less 'quit' the ED behaviours?
I used to be a fast learner... then came the long-term ED habits... now I eat more or less healthy most of the time, and yet I my learning ability seems to have runaway still:sigh: ...when will I be able to 'learn' like I used to...
(or is it just old age settling in? )

Longterm starving can cause brain cells to die, so it is possible that you've lost some of that learning ability. However, I don't know for absolute 100% certainty, and I do know that there is always a hope of whatever you've lost coming back. It also depends on how long you've been eating healthily, and whether you're getting enough calories. You may think you are - I thought that eating roughly 2000cal a day would be enough - and then I found out when I went into treatment this summer that my body burns that much without figuring exercise or anything into it. So now I'm on a diet of around 2600 - 2700 (I don't know for certain because I don't want to get obsessive about it), and my mental concentration and learning ability has returned to *almost* where it used to be. Not quite. But almost.

Also, random factoid ... your brain burns 60% of what you take in. So if you aren't getting enough - then you're still starving your brain - which means that it's not going to be able to work to its full potential.

If this is at all feasible, I would say go to a nutritionist, get a metabolic rate test done, and then see how many calories per day you do actually need.

:hug: Hope some of that helped.

ED behaviors aside, I personally have noticed a distinct change in my mental abilities after my 30th birthday. I forget little things and have to write everything down. Again, I don't know if it's the ED behaviors or the drug addiction for my early 20's finally catching up to me, but this is happening to me, too.
