You are required to have the CD in the drive for most titles that are available. The most probably reason for the STEAM registration, is to prevent pirates from circumventing the copy-protection (e.g. Starforce) with tools like DaemonWare and no-CD patches.

I had no problems with the STEAM registration or the installation for that matter, and I have the retail version.

Except those who get the Steam version are not required to deal with the CD issues. It's nice, to pay $5 more to deal with extra hassles.

And the Steam version is just as easily (if not more so) pirated. Heck, the workaround Valve gave for people without an internet connection is exactly all you need to do to get a working pirated version off a Steam download. Kinda defeats the whole purpose doesn't it?

For what it's worth, I routinely circumvent copy protection on games I have legitimately bought, just so I can ACTUALLY PLAY THEM.

I absolutely, positively, refuse to install Starforce, or any other copy protection scheme that works by permanently leaving itself running as part of my system. Games that think they need Starforce to run are games I yell at the company about for months.

And I have a pending offer of returning one Starforce game as an exchange for something else. I'll keep doing it until they stop giving me Starforce crud. :)

I only have a 56k modem and it drove me nuts!!! A friend of mine bought the game and since I already own a legal cd key, (got it with my 9800 XT) I borrowed his game and installed it (instead of waiting for 4-6 weeks if you order it, first having to take pictures of your graphics card and all sorts of other hoops to jump through). It took me 2 and a half hours before I cold click the start new game icon and that was after it was installed. Updating steam, unlocking CS Source, unlocking HL2, updating CS Source, updating HL2.

This is the most annoying original game ever! To get working that is... But at least the game seems ok...

Speaking of which I am not in them iddle of the buggy part!

He heh. After getting over the initial annoyance of the installation process and having played the game about halfway through I can go as far as pretty good :D.

I got the Gold edition off steam. $100 is a small price to pay for this game.
Beat it 3 times, and am uber on Deathmatch. Anyone here played that yet? It owns.

What do you get in the gold edition? don't think i've seen one in sweden... so i'm curious.
