I had no problems with the STEAM registration or the installation for that matter, and I have the retail version.
Except those who get the Steam version are not required to deal with the CD issues. It's nice, to pay $5 more to deal with extra hassles.
And the Steam version is just as easily (if not more so) pirated. Heck, the workaround Valve gave for people without an internet connection is exactly all you need to do to get a working pirated version off a Steam download. Kinda defeats the whole purpose doesn't it?
