On the flip side of that principle, this is why I don't hesitate buying games from companies like Epic (they release patches that remove the CD checks from their games after a while) or Arenanet (they're making Guild Wars, what is essentially a *free* MMORPG, none of that pay-per-month business, which BTW, is also getting more and more expensive).
I agree, some game companies realize that if you take care of the customer, the customer will take care of you. You can even get the source for Quake 1&2 and build a legal copy free :)thumbsup: Id). I'm really looking forward to Guild Wars as well since the new generation MMORPGs are probably going to be $15-$19 a month. Gone are the days of $9.95 EQ. lol

The temptation to buy this game is great, especially since I set aside $50.00 to purchase Battle for Middle Earth. However, I have been craving nice shooter to release some aggression on. Might wait till the 23rd, as that is the day PIRATES! is out. Even though I pre-ordered it, I might return it (wait until after I read the reviews to open it) in exchange for HL2...

...unless one of you friendly peeps would like to donate a new copy to me. ^_^

I'll definitely buy HL2, but not until it gets to a decent price. The original HL was one of the best games of it's kind that I ever played. From what I've seen already, it's going to be just as good.

God bless!

I'm not happy with Steam. I've not bought the game and am not sure I will, even though I've been dying for this game for a few years now. Steam had a bowel movement the first day the game came out. They *knew* the traffic would be heavy. After six years, if Vivendi isn't prepared to serve its customers by allowing them to play a game they paid money for because their own server took a nose dive, then I may have to pass on giving them my money. There are way too many other games I can buy without having to deal with this corporate nonsense.

heh. uhh...that word wasn't what you thought it was.

I've read so many nightmares about installing and then being able to play the game that I'm too afraid to buy it. I would be more inclined to acquire a hacked version at the moment.
Most people don't have any problems. As long as you have a decent internet connection, you should be fine.

I had some hassles with it, myself, but they had to do with other programs trying to pop messages up to my screen while I was playing. I turned them off and didn't have any more problems.

I wonder if they will have the same gimped copy protection on the XBox version? I still have my xbox on the network but I don't have a live account since the free 3 months that came with the console expired. I'm kind of glad my pc won't run it now since I would have certainly bought it. Hopefully by the time I can get a new PC and get the game, they will have done away with steam or someone will have created a program that defeats it.

I heard about the problems too, and some one on another boards finally convinced me to buy it. I will be honest - the install took a little bit longer than most games, but I was ready to play 45-minutes after I started the process. Since then, I have had no problems with the game or STEAM... save that I got my tail handed to me in CS. ^_^

Let's not forget those with the retail version are required to have the CD in the drive despite also being forced to go through all that Steam junk.

You are required to have the CD in the drive for most titles that are available. The most probably reason for the STEAM registration, is to prevent pirates from circumventing the copy-protection (e.g. Starforce) with tools like DaemonWare and no-CD patches.

I had no problems with the STEAM registration or the installation for that matter, and I have the retail version.

Maybe in the long run when I, by some miracle, scrounge up enough money to build a new computer, I'll get it. For now, I'll stick with Halo 2. Also, I can't run LAN parties with my friends on HL2 as easily as with Halo 2, and that is currently the basis of my only attraction to FPSs.
