His Grace
READ: Romans 5
Romans 5:20 (NKJV) "Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more."
When Billy Graham was driving through a small southern USA town, he was stopped by a police officer and charged with speeding. Graham admitted his guilt, but was told by the officer that he would have to appear in court. The judge asked, "Guilty, or not guilty? When Graham pleaded guilty, the judge replied, "That'll be ten dollars -- a dollar for every mile you went over the limit."
Suddenly the judge recognized the famous minister. "You have violated the law," he said. "The fine must be paid--but I am going to pay it for you. He took a ten dollar bill from his own wallet, attached it to the ticket, and then took Graham out and bought him a steak dinner! "That," said Billy Graham, "is how God treats repentant sinners! (Christianglobe.com).
This illustration is a perfect example of the grace of God and what it means to us as Christians. Though the whole world seems sick, twisted, and afraid, in the midst of it all, there is God's grace. It is completely free, undeserved, and overflowing (Ephesians 2). In our time of greatest need, it comes not in little sprinkles, but from the waterfall of God's everlasting love. When the world's darkness and evil threatens to overtake us, we discover that God has sent the light of His grace in Jesus Christ, His beloved Son. Paul wrote in Romans 5:20, "Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more." Thankfully, we have that same promise of His grace today as Paul did back then.
The very heart of the Gospel we preach and share with others is the ultimate truth that God accepts us with no conditions whenever we place our faith and trust in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. Although we are helplessly sinful here on earth (Romans 3:23), God's grace forgives us completely each and every time we mess up (What an amazing truth this isthink about that for a minute!). Thank the Lord today for His eternal grace!
Faith Lesson: The only appropriate reaction to God's grace is to serve Him with humility, love, and devotion.
