  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, I posted this already in the 'for new christians' forum, but I think maybe this is the better place for it? Anyway, I'll just quote my original :) ...

Ok, I have read a couple of posts where people have said that they use highlighter pens when reading the bible and I thought this was a pretty good idea. But which bits would I highlight? The bits I've read? the bits I did/didn't understand? Something else?
Any help on this would be fantastic, as I think it'd be a really good way of reading the whole bible (you'd never miss bits!!), but I'm not sure how to go about it.
Thankyou in advance!!

Hi ditzi - I keep a notebook at my side and a pencil and highlighter. I use all three liberally. I generally highlight those verses which are answers to prayer or questions I've had. I underline everything that strikes a chord inside me. I write in the notebook thoughts, prayers, verses, whatever comes to mind while reading.

Try reading first without highlighting or underlining anything. Think about verses you've just read that you would hate to forget. Maybe re-read, make notes, and as a last resort highlight/underline! I think you'll enjoy returning to favorite verses!

The point of higlighting anything (as you might do in a textbook in school) is so that it stands out above the rest of the text and makes it easer to find it.

Now what you want to draw your attention to in the Bible so you can easily find passages the next time you look at it, is entirely up to you and what speaks to you may be different than what's important to others.

Some people higlight important theological points; some highlight passages that comfort them them, etc. What some people do is use multiple color highlighters and use a different color for each theme. For example, you could use red for hard questions, green for words on salvation, blue for encouraging and comforting words, etc. It's really about making your Bible something you can use easier.

But I wouldn't just highlight everything you've read, because then it defeats the purpose. It's like those few students who would actually highlight a whole textbook--too much emphasis means no emphasis at all, and you still end up not finding anything.

Also, since most Bible paper tends to be really thin, I would test out different highlighters on a small corner of a page first to see how badly it bleeds through. It doesn't help if a highlighter bleeds through so that you don't know which side was highlighted.
