  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I couldn't stand Big and Rich when I first heard "Save a horse" and thought goodness, I hope they are one hit wonders! However I have liked a couple of songs they have done since then and they seem to have more depth than I originally thought after hearing that gimmick first hit. However I don't get into Cowboy Troy at all, I don't think most true country fans will get into rap disguised as country. I actually think that country has been getting a little more country and a little less country pop lately so I really don't know how country rap would fit in right now.

Here's the thing- there's always been "gimmick" songs in country music. That's why I've said I don't hate it - its all a part of country's history. For example, "Whisperin" Bill Anderson put out a "country disco" song in the 70s- and in my opinion, "hick hop" makes just as much sense as that! :) Even as we speak, Willie Nelson has just released a reggae album!!

Really though- country music has lots of different influences and mixes different styles of music- some more obvious than other. There's lots of blues, rock, jazz, gospel, R&B, etc., influences that you hear in country music along with the different traditional strains of country music. That's what makes it good, IMO - there's a little bit of everything there and it comes together. Granted, not every song is my personal cup of tea, but that's all part of the fun of the music! :) Every new "fad" that comes along is declared to be the "death of country music". What we see through the years is that it usually just adds another dimension to what we consider to be "country".

Besides, it ain't really music unless there's a banjo...

and a nice fiddle...

"If you wanna play in Texas you gotta have a fiddle in the band, that steel guitar is hot but not for Lousiana Man..."

:D

I can't stand the cowboy Troy song.

As for Big and Rich, I believe they have a lot of talent, I just wish they'd use it better. Their lyrics, taste, and subject matter (except for Holy Water) that I've heard has a lot to be desired. I LOVED "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" for the tune. Then I actually listened to the words. I was mortified. I was singing it all the time and humming it around the house for about 2 weeks before the lyrics sank in! Wasn't the first time I realized I needed to pay better attention to what my little ears hear.

Blessings

***didn't see rednecks "fiddle" reply earlier

I have seen it on tv twice. The first time he had a big crowd, and it was roaring. I showed it to my daughter on the internet, and she passed it around to everyone she knew. Cowboy Troy and his song appear to be a gimmick to me. Glad Jimmy Hendrix isn't around to see it!

I just listened to it over at CMT. I am stunned :o

I did not think that it could be done Mae, but someone has written a country song that is actually worse than BRC's Achy Breaky Heart  Hell must have frozen over.

I figured out the reason why I hated country music-it is because I was hearing this stuff when I was growing up, and I never heard Merel Haggard or Johnny Cash!

It is not just a sad day for country music, but for hip-hop, rock, and for music in general that this song is even being played and listened too.

I am embarrassed that this Charely Pride wannabe is actually from Dallas and went to my grandfather's alma mater-UT.

And the name "hick hop"-could he not think of anything better than that?

i know lots of ppl who like big and rich.

how could you not?

They are modern "country" for starters . . . . Give me Eminem any day of the week over modern "country". Another thing is that they are not that handsome.

That's a mighty big compliment to pay someone you seem to dislike. :) CP is one of the all-time greats in country music!

Well, obviously there'll never be another Johnny Cash, and there'll never be another Merle Haggard, or Charley Pride, or Loretta Lynn or anyone else...just as there'll never be another me - lol! :p We're all originals in our own way, but let me tell ya, if I was a country artist and someone called me a "wannabe Lorretta Lynn", I would take that as a huge compliment even if not meant as such, because I respect her music and what she's done, etc., etc. :)

God bless!
