  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well I consider myself an open-minded atheist and that's probably why I registered here. It would really make my day if some of you could proselytize me or at least answer some of my questions.

Being an atheist all my life is making it kind of hard to choose from so many flamboyant religions and I'd like to know, how I can tell that a religion is valid and coherent. Is only one religion correct, perhaps more? All? Of course the latter is ludicrous, but how can I tell? What are the criteria that form an true religion?

I have more questions, but let's just see if someone's going to bother with these first.

Welcome Ratiocinative! Hope you like it here. :D

You're not alone in feeling the way you do. I've had those same questions myself. For me, it came down to in most other religions, people spend their entire lives trying to reach God, or even become God, but Christianity is the one religion where God reaches out to man, Not only that, he became one of us (Jesus). He lived a human life, experienced what we experience day-to-day, and rather than sitting up there and telling us "do this, dont do that"...he came down here and showed us. And then, having lived a pure and sinless life, he still bore our sin and died for us, so even though we royally screwed up, we can be made right with God through that sacrifice.

How do we know it's the one true religion? Well, it's a combination of personal experience and faith, for me.

But the answer varies from person to person.

This is really just the Introduction section. You'll get a lot more answers and discussion over in the Discussion & Debate section.

Stick around man. Glad you found us!
