I am new to the forums and also a beginner photographer. I have a canon D200 digital which is a little more camera than I know how to use but I am having fun with it. I thought I wanted to take "artsy" photos of oddities around town (San Fran) but my shots just look silly, pretentious or both. I am finding that my best shots are of friends and family and my wife, which may bore most people, but I am beginning to think that I have a good sense of when to have the camera ready. Anyways, I enjoy your posts and look forward to learning. I'd be cool messaging with anyone, too, and perhaps learn together.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Firstly welcome to the forum and to the photography section, you are very welcome and there are plenty of people with great advice. Don`t be afraid to show off pictures either
. By all means if you like the 'artsy' photos then take them, but it would seem that 'people' photography is your best area (your words), people make great subjects not to mention there is a lot of money in portraits, family and wedding photography, I am a great believer of playing to your strengths............it would seem that people photography is yours.

p.s what kind of camera is the d200 is it an slr (change lenses camera (allthough there are other types slr's are the most widely used)), canon you see do the 20d, it is Nikon that do the d200, and a fine camera it is.

I've found that developing an eye for proper artsy photos can really be something that takes time to get down. I wouldn't give up on it, just keep trying and reading books/posts that discuss the rules of thumb that go along with that type of photography.
Also try posting some of your favorite shots on websites where you can get good feedback.

I've come to the conclusion that the only way to improve my photography (or much of anything else I do) is to try lots of things and make lots of mistakes. That includes trying to do things that are beyond my skill level, and that I feel a little silly (or pretentious) trying. You can't score if you don't shoot. But taking the kind of pictures that feels most natural to you seems like a good way to make the most of your efforts.

Hey no worries we all do it, anywho posting pictures, well most people use a image hosting site like Flickr or photobucket etc, those two are the most well known and are free. You sign up download your photos, then if you want to post those photos on another site (like here say) then you can get a http code, copy and paste that to word or notepad, open christian forums and go to the relavant thread and then in your post Click on the insert image icon, copy and paste the code from the word document (I use notepad its a little quicker to load up) into the pop up that came up from clicking on the insert image icon and then press ok and your picture should come up.
In Flickr on the home page you have an option to view 'your photos' click on that and then click on the photo you want to show. I think you then have to click on the "all sizes" bit above the photo.
Then below the photo their will be a option to copy the HTML code or the URL, you want the URL.
1. Copy and paste this HTML into your webpage:

2. Grab the photo's URL:
Remember to have notepad open so that you can copy the code onto that (you can copy more than one obviously). Then when you have the codes of the pictures you are ready to post them, log onto CF if you havn`t already and in your post press on the Insert image icon. Paste the code in the pop up and click ok, and repeat for anyother codes you may have on the notepad.
It should be relativly similar for the other image hosting sites, hope that helps, if their is anything you don`t get we can go over it in a bit more detail.
