Hi! I would like to know about Calvanism!

One thing you almost always find to be true of Calvinists/Reformed people:

We eat our own.

I however am one of about seventeen "nice calvinists" left in the world since the death of James Boice.

;)
Ain't it the truth. :sigh:

Unfortunately, Calvinists often spin wildly out of control and eat their own children when they are treated gently, too. I'm unsure how to deal with that. It can be so tough to figure out whether to be severe or gentle.

Ugh, God help us.

'We love Him because He first loved us!'
Those who have an interest in knowing Him do so because He has regenerated our heart! It is very humbling to come to know Him and to know that no man comes to the Father unless the Holy Spirit summons him. We have such gratitude and humility to think that we are blest to know our holy, sovereign God for no reason other than it is HIs choice, His desire and by nothing we have done, no worth of our own! Read Ephesians 1 and 2.

As for the Puritan Board, I'd have to disagree. They are very strict with the WCF as a standard. There is some freedom given to "Reformed" Baptists but they still use the London Baptist Confession of 1689. [I'm a 1644/46er]

Debating Calvinism: Five points, Two Views by Dave Hunt and James White; 2004; Multnomah Publishers: From the back cover: “Calvinism has been a topic of intense discussion for centuries. In this lively debate, two passionate thinkers take opposing sides, providing valuable responses to the most frequently asked questions about Calvinism.” Hunt actually verbalizes many of the objections raised by those reading the above books. It is useful to read White’s responses to those objections.

Meh, I have to disagree on this one. That's a great list you've got (especially Horton's material, he's awesome). The problem with this book is Dave Hunt. James White is a brilliant individual and a good example of Calvinism. To be blunt, Dave Hunt is no where near an even match. His arguments are weak and ridden with fallacies. His rhetoric takes you back to middle school, and worse he's just plain mean. I really try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I almost think he may be consciously trying to misrepresent Calvinism in his responses.

Anyhow, I would recommend finding a good Reformed church (I would recommend either and Orthodox Presbyterian Church or a United Reformed Church) and regularly attending. I believe that you will find most Reformed ministers to be rather well educated and capable of answering your questions.

Sincerely,
Brett (the Neo-Calvinist newbie who never posts)
