I have read, Exodus 20 4“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

and I have also read, Deuteronomy 5 8“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

Deuteronomy 4:16 so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman,

I want to know if I as a christian can make art?

I usually like to paint people. but ever since I read these I have stop painting because if I take it literally, well I can't draw much... I mean, it said "Earth" so does that mean everything in earth like animals and people and all that?

Idk but I do want an answer, and if that answer is no than so be it!

The context is in making idols for false worship - that is, holding them first, before the Lord Himself. It is not in reference to merely making images. A bit later, God Himself would direct intricate ornamentation of the elements in the Tabernacle, such as the Ark of the Covenant with its golden angel figures and engravings on its sides. You can read about the outfitting of the First Temple in 1kings 6, how it included angelic figures. The Lord would later bless that temple with His Shekinah glory upon its dedication.

Islam is big on geometric patterns because of legalism regarding this, but we are under no such injunction. And then in the New Testament you can read 2 Corinthians 3 for a brief synopsis of the freedom we have under the New Covenant.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see that this is an introductory thread. Welcome! If you want further detailed replies, you could ask this again in the Advice section or one of the theology sections.

Welcome here you can discuss with bible smart people and possibly make new friends, hope you like it here!
Also yeah those parts in the bible are talking more on to not make an image into an idol or God,because you notice it says"graven image" meaning as in a stone tablet, not something that can so easily be removed like with painting, and I believe it is also referring to respecting the beauty that God created,by not duplicating such things in a manner that God would not approve of,because oft times people have seen graven images and thought to worship them in place of God not thinking on that God made those creations.

Hi and welcome to CF

I myself am an artist and do take those commandments seriously.

God himself told his people how they should worship HIM, he did not leave it up to them to decide and he was specific about the making of idols, icons, etc to represent him.

Knowing that I do not use my gift to make any of these things. But abstract kinds of things are OK.

Also things like landscapes, ocean views are good as well. ..

Things like this I find beautiful, a celebration of color!
