It's really a lot like writing a story with other people-- plus there's no dice involved, so it leaves a lot more up to your discretion. :) I'd consider P&P a pretty good start, though... all the same things about staying in character apply, but you have to use your discretion as to what constitutes a reasonable action because there's no dice or computer to decide your success or failure. Generally the GMing around here is a lot looser, aside from forum guidelines and those that might've been laid down by the person who started the RPG you're joining.

Keep your spelling and grammar decent like any self-respecting writer, stay in keeping with the theme of whatever RPG you're in, and develop your characters! One good thing to retain from P&P is just to let stuff happen and see how it shakes out. That leads to some interesting twists. :)
