• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

First off, let me introduce myself.

Im Jeremy and Im a 26yr old from Texas. I work full time as a security guard at a major oil refinery here in Houston.

I guess Ive been suffering from depression for the past couple of years now. It hits really hard around the holidays and summertime. Especially when I go with my family to different outings. I finally realized last night that the only way to deal with it, was to come out in the open and talk about it. I had a real long talk with my friend John and its time for me to get some help. Im not at the point of going to some doctor or anything as I can go to work and stuff anf function, but I do have the occasional breakdown. Im hope I can find some people here who have gone through the same stuff as I have and help me with the healing. I would rather be in a comfortable christian setting and get advice this way. Thank you for listening to my story.

Hi Jeremy!

I can certainly empathsize with your depression and I realize that seeking help can be difficult for those with mental illness. I have experienced severe depression for most of my life and I have been able to overcome nearly all of it since I was 20 years old. I would be glad to assist you in your healing process but I would suggest seeing a professional for your depression. Hope to talk to you soon!:groupray:

I had SEVERE depression for a year. I could not function at all and I was completely hopeless. When I would be asked, "Do you see any hope?" I would say things like, "I'll acknowledge that it is possible with a miracle through God, but I don't see it ever happening."

Sure enough, almost exactly one year after my initial depression

BAM!

God grabbed my hand and took me out of it, made me "born again" and I have been very well since. Every day I still marvel at how amazing this miracle was.

An entire year of depression almost instantly ended by a miracle of God through the Holy Spirit.

I know this may not help, and I never would've believed me if I heard this 6 months ago.

All I can say is pray, trust in God, and do things and go to places (church, places with other Christians, etc) where you find most centered with God and close to God.

I will be praying for you.

First take it to God. There maybe a reason for His purpose that you are going through this hard time. I would suggest is to make sure those around you know.
Build a support group. Your Pastor would be a good start because he will be able to comfort you and help you through this process where others may not feel comfortable. Understand that the people around you are human. They will either want to fix it or they will avoid you because they don't know how to make you feel better. If they do that it's not that they don't care about you or that they aren't listening to you. Its that most people either want to help or they don't know how to help so they stay away. The last thing when all else doesn't seem to be helping, go see a Doctor. Many people get depression due to a physical Illness though most depression is due to enviromental events. Also if you are between the ages 19-27 it is also good to go see a doctor. Alot of what we call mental illnesses appear during those ages. Understand that my advise is not a professional advise. I'm merely a college student. I hope that helps and I will be praying for you as well. My own story is alot like your own but until I got a support group around me it was hard and sometimes it still is. I hope you get extremely bless through this period that it strengthens you. God bless you I will pray as well.

First all, good job on opening up to people around you about this. I think that's probably the hardest step for most people to take. But this is not a problem that should be attempted to be dealt with on your own, it's good to have friends around who will listen and support you through this.

Don't wait until it is completely debilitating to seek professional help. And realize that there are a lot of different kinds of professionals out there. If you don't want to take medication, go to someone who doesn't practice medicine. Look for a psychotherapist. They will help you by talk therapy, train your brain how to replace negative thoughts and emotions with positive ones. Also look for a Christian one so that you can feel more comfortable with the advice they offer.
