  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The deal is - I bought a great (quality not size) bit of land with a lot of potential. . . intending to live in the quite old house on the front of the property and eventually build something good on the back of the property. Repair remodel costs have hit the tipping point, it is time to get serious about the "back" house.

Considering: Log
Something on a precast basement foundation
Earth sheltered/ earth berm

Considerations: View to the south isn't near as good as view north (aesthetically)
Lot is long and narrow, facing a road on the west, neighbors north and south, unoccupied woodland to the east.
Water is good, very good from current well.
Terrain is low, rolling hills. low spot between current and intended building spots may be dug into a pond.

So . . .. what advice?

Live in the old house if possible and if you build don't worry about the view but about maximizing passive heating and cooling possibilities.
