The only significant heretical movements which developed in the areas which were Oriental Orthodox were Julianism (though this also had a significant impact in the Byzantine communities and the Emperor Justinian became a julianist or aphtartodocetist at the end of his life), and Paulicianism within the Armenian and Georgian Churches.

The Julianists followed the teachings of Julian of Halicarnassus who seems to have taught that the humanity of Christ was not liable to suffering and the blameless passions but only gave the appearance of suffering. He taught that the humanity of Christ was entirely glorified from the moment of the incarnation, rather than from, as St Severus taught, the resurrection. As I suggested, this first view was also held by many within the Byzantine empire, including the Emperor Justinian.

The Paulicians were a dualist movement in Anatolia and Armenia. They had added a mix of other, older errors and were perhaps a syncretistic local Christian movement such as we might imagine in some parts of South America. When several hundred thousand of these folk were forced to move into Thrace they settled and spread their faith within that part of the empire such that it was strong within Bulgaria.

The heresies found within the Byzantine empire did not really impact the Oriental Orthodox, who have not been monothelite, or iconoclasts.

I hope this helps..

Peter
