  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Falling Waters, thank you, and I understand that. I don't know why I struggle with getting something back from claiming my giving to the Lord. I have no problem with putting all the other down, but my tithe (or whatever you want to call it) I believe should not be included. I honestly do not have a problem with others doing it. It is set up in our law for us to do that, but just because it is the law of the land doesn't always mean that we should do it. Common law marriage is living together and saying you are married. In some states if not all, it is a legitimate marriage. Well, are we then going to make the marriage ceremony held by a pastor in a church obsolete? I'm not saying to claim your giving is wrong. I was just hoping to get some feedback on it. I appreciate all the imput. I'm praying!
In my opinion, it seems like you should follow the dictates of your own conscience, since not reporting your charitable giving is not a sin.

I think you're right. It's a conscience thing. Thank you.

Since one cannot tithe according to what God defined it as in the Bible I guess I don't see the point of trying to figure out what percentage of income will get God "off one's back" so to speak.

I personally think to only give 10% of one's income is stingy and is contrary to how Jesus teaches His followers to live.

God doesn't have any printing presses. God doesn't have a key to the US Treasury. God doesn't point a finger and create a pot of gold. This post implies exactly that, that God will just pour out a blessing from thin air. Although He could, He almost never does. God's work is done through His people.

God does expect His people to share that which He has given them, and nothing you have was not given you by God. Why would someone want to be stingy with God's blessings? There is the crux of the issue many have: They think what they have is what they earned, and that isn't the case at all. Everything is a gift from God, and if someone begins to think otherwise, it will quickly be taken from them.
Like I said I do not give to ministry's that tithes. I do give to minisrtys that receive tithes. God does provide all their needs.

Ju,

To answer your question, I just want to point out, as one other member did, what is actually happening with tithes and taxes.

When you give your tithe, it goes to your church, right? Your government does not get the money and, therefore, can't give it back. Nor is this the idea.

The idea of charitable deductions is simple. The government taxes you on what you earn, so if you make $50,000, that is what they tax you on, but if you give $5,000 as a tithe, then you no longer have that money, and you did not use it on yourself, so the government does not tax you on it. So then, they only tax you on $45,000 because they do not consider what is given away as taxable income. Now, if you get a refund due to this, it is not because you got any money back. See, your company deducts money each month from your check, estimating, but not knowing, how much you will owe at the end of the year. They don't know that you are giving 10%, so that does not go into the equation. When you file your taxes, if you let the government know you gave that money away, then they do not tax you on it. If they have taken too much, you get some back; yes, it is the taxes on your tithe, but not actually part of the tithe, since your church already has all of that.

But, I don't want you to be money hungry, and if you feel tempted by the money or feel that you need to let it go, do so. Though let me suggest one other thing.

Claim the tithe on your taxes, get the money back, then GIVE the money to your church or some other Christian charity, so that the money goes to them, instead of to the government! This way you can give even more to God!

So many good answers here!

I also believe that this should be a matter of personal conscience. You gotta do what you gotta do to feel right with your God.

As for myself, I've never felt the least bit sorry about using my trackable gifts as a deduction on my income taxes. I see it as just one more of God's blessings! And when we do receive a refund from the money that the government has claimed from our income all year long, we give a portion of that gift to God's work. So those first gifts just keeps growing and circling back to make more gifts! :)

Jusluv,PDF, FallingWaters, and everyone else...thanks for explaining it ...over and over and over again. You have been patient. I am confident that you all are men and women after God's own heart, and are speaking truth. I do believe next year I will claim my giving and tithe(give) on my refund. I've got the faith for that. Thank you all sooooo much. Really.
