  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hello,

I am a Sophomore in College. I have changed my major twice. i really cant decide what to do for a career. i dont really care about making money, but job security does matter to me. (there for i decided on becoming a teacher) at first i wanted to be a history teacher, but then i switched to science education. i love history, but history teachers are "a dime a dozen" and they have a major surplus anyways. im currently a science education, but dont really know if i want to be (i picked science because its indemand). anyone got any ideas for a career i might pursue? if i switch majors i want to do it now while i have low amount of credits...dont want to do a junior/senior switch.

-i want to live in a small town, i hate big cities. 7,000 pop. or less...the smaller the better

-dont care about money, but do desire job security

Thanks for reading and if you help thank you in advance. Praise be to god!

Yours in christ,

MSM.

What about languages? Are you interested in languages? Language teachers aren't very common! :) You could learn spanish or french or something and teach it :) and use it in every day life!

Another good job to consider is a nurse. You can help people and you have super job security. You also won't work as many hours. Yeah teachers get great holidays, but they are known to work very VERY hard weeks the weeks they do work!

Pre-school teachers will always be in demand. Since you're a male, you're even more highly in-demand often, because male pre-school teachers are super rare! Now that has excellent hours.

What about teaching economics/accounting? I'm not sure how in-demand these jobs are though.

Be careful if you're doing biology. Theres starting to get a surplus of biology teachers. Physics/chemistry teachers are whats needed!

What about industrial arts? You know, like metal and wood work. Those teachers are in demand!

And, if you're uber smart, go into engineering.

my wife is a teacher she teaches 4th grade. she loves it, but it really is a calling to teach. it is something that you know you want to do, a very high percentage of teachers quit within the first couple of years, most of those the first year. i personally am persuing an alternative energy degree, i find it very interesting, and it sould be stable...

I am currently a chemistry and natural (earth) science teacher. i was really interested in biology but i do not want to teach evolution, and from my classes that i have taken their is no getting around it... so im going to avoid that all together. but thankfully the subjects i have chosen agrees with my religious beliefs to where i wont feel like im not teaching what should be taught, and im not teaching a anti-christian theory (evolution). as for languages, im trying to learn russian. i got some of it down, and can hold a little conversation, but...i dont see me getting good at it (hard to make those noises they make :S...haha!)...as for teaching being my calling...i dont know...its the only thing ive ever imagined being, but thats the point of this thread...is their a better choice out their?

I would disagree with this strongly. My mother and Sister both teach, neither of them intended to go into education until much later in life, in fact teaching was something my mother never wanted to do, and shes been teaching for almost 30 odd years now. My sister graduated Uni as a physio therapist, but has since moved onto being a teaching aid/teacher with special needs kids.

Plus through my mum I know most of the local teachers in my home town and very few of them grew up wanting to teach. Same goes for allot of the College instructors I'm chatty with these days.

My advice is to just pick something and stick with it. When you get to the point you're looking for work, there is no telling where they will put you! And in this economy, you can't pick and choose. If you REALLY want job security, get your Special Education certificate.

This year at the middle school I work at (just a paraeducator right now) two teachers left mid-year, one due to pregnancy, the other because she just couldn't handle the kids, which required a LOT of restructuring. A science teacher had to go to language arts, and a math teacher had to go to health.

Also, you may find that once you get out there you'll enjoy other subjects more. I used to hate math, but since I started helping out in two different math classes, I can't imagine teaching anything else! I love it!

As far as teaching evolution is concerned... don't avoid a subject you enjoy 99% of (science) just because you disagree with one part of it. There are ways to explain to the students that you may not agree with certain things. Be honest with them. There are always things we disagree with, but simply avoiding an entire subject because of one detail is nonsense. Sooner or later every student has to/will learn about evolution. Wouldn't it then be better to hear that some people disagree with it, rather than taking it as fact?

That's my $.02

Don't be afraid of Biology courses if that's your first choice. Many private Chirstian schools (and some public schools) have found ways of introducing their material in a way that is compliant with the major belief systems.

I'm a pre-med major at a private college and I have thouroughly enjoyed how the material has been presented in a way I can trust and by people I can trust.

What level of education are you looking to go into?...most contriversial issues aren't even covered in elementary/middle schools anyway right?

I hate to tell people "you should do this" because I'm not the one who has to live with the repercusions...but I do like to make people think. Take it to prayer and God always provides an answer to the plans He has for you! :)
