  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Although it can be common to get baptized again in protestant Churches. Catholics believe one baptism is sufficient. To be baptized again and in another church no less is a BIG no no.
I need help. My boyfriend decided to get baptized at a penetecostal church, but I am a catholic. He also suggested that I should get baptized again. Isn't one baptism sufficient?

Thank you, I have always wondered why protestant churches have said that baptism as a child isn't relevant and that baptism is more significant when done as an adult.

Well some believe that one must make a concious decision. Usually after accepting Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.

Here are some links that might help you with the Catholic pov so you are not pressured into making a bad decision.

http://www.catholic.com/tracts/baptism-immersion-only

http://www.catholic.com/tracts/the-necessity-of-baptism

Keep in mind as well, if your boyfriend is not Catholic now, the RCC usually finds those baptisms valid should he ever decide to convert to Catholicism. For you, it opens a whole can of worms.

Unfortunately, I can't open any of the links you provided. And I totally agree with the final bit, I tried going to his church but I felt a bit like an outcast, they were not very relatable.

I hope it's okay for me to post in here, as I am not Catholic. The reason some protestant churches/denominations would require another baptism is because they do not see infant baptism as a legitimate baptism. Also, being baptized as a child is seen as different than being baptized as an infant as a child can understand the confession they are making whereas a baby cannot. Many protestant/evangelical denominations believe that unless a person understands what they are doing that the baptism is merely a dunk in the water, if you will, and is not a legitimate baptism.

Well Protestants have no agreement with each other on baptism. Some will say 'adults only' while others baptize children. Some say 'one baptism' while others will baptize over and over again. If you want to watch a big argument, ask a bunch of Protestants about baptism.

Live your own baptism and be confident in it. You do not need to be baptized again, no matter what anybody says. And great that your boyfriend is getting baptized. The Catholic Church will recognize and accept that baptism if and when he finally comes to his senses and becomes Catholic.

I am not a catholic but I may be able to shed some light on that subject.

With the kind indulgence of my Catholic brothers, of course.

You feeling like an outcast was a red flag for me, and possibly shed some light on his pressuring you to get baptized. (re-baptized)

If his church is a Oneness Pentecostal like United Pentecostal, Apostolic Pentecostal, or Pentecostal Assembly of Jesus, they believe that ANY baptism in the formula of "Father Son and Holy Spirit" is invalid and will send you to hell. They believe in the ancient heresy of modalism. They are vehemently anti- trinitarian. They are also vehemently anti-Catholic.

And if it is United Pentecostal, (the oneness group I am most familiar with) if you wear pants of any kind, makeup, jewelry, or have hair that is less than shoulder length, you will not fit in.

Would the Catholic church accept a "Jesus Only" baptism of the Oneness congregations?
I would not.

That would be unacceptable. I didn't think of the 'Oneness Pentecostals', who have put themselves beyond the pale.

Yeah. They were the biggest congregation in my home town in the 1980s and 90s. (maybe they still are)

we do not

we also do not accept Baptism done in the name of the "Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier"
that was an error in the 1970's not sure how widespread it was but some churches had that going on :(

Please pray for him, if you love him, don't let him go to a false Church.
