• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have an obsessive thinking problem with my eyes. I think im gonna some how take them out. I guess like reach in there grab hold and pull them out. Is that even possible? Wouldnt you pass out from the pain before you even got close? I know there are 6 muscles holding them there and the optic nerve. Ive had this obsession for almost a year. And sometimes I mess with my eyes too.

This is the first time I've seen this type of obsession.

Trust me when I say this, don't mess with your eyes. They are very precious.

Have you been to a doctor and spoke to someone about this?

How long have you been feeling this way?

Many blessings to you

Hi Superman,
I can't diagnose you with OCD but I can tell you that I had a similar obsession when I was younger. I didn't obsess that I might take my eyes out but worried that I might poke them out. It started when I was an adolescent with a thought that came just before I went to sleep at night that I might accidently poke my eye out in my sleep. This morphed into me wondering if I might do it while I was awake - not able to control the impulse. The reason I thought this was because I couldn't get the thought out of my head and that made me start to think that I might actually do it. The thought eventually lost the ability to freak me out as over time my brain grew weary of thinking about it. I'm 51 years old and still have both my eyes. :) I never knew it had anything to do with OCD back then but I do now.
So at least there's one other person in this world who can relate to this unpleasant obsession. Scary stuff!!
Oh... I also went through a very long period of fear that I might swallow my tounge.
That one makes me laugh now but back when it haunted me it wasn't funny at all.
If you've never been diagnosed as having OCD you should probably take Jayangels suggestion and go see a doctor.
If this is OCD, then there is help available to help you learn to manage these unwanted, instrusive & disturbing thoughts. It's called exposure response therapy.
Praying for you,
Mitzi

Hi Jayangel,
Well, now you've heard of it two times. :) (You're probably thinking - man that Gracealone... she's really whacked out.)
Actually I know of one other person with OCD who has also had unpleasant obsessions about their eyes. It really makes sense in that OCD will often cause us to have very disturbing images and thoughts pop into our brain. These thoughts will usually latch on to something or some relationship that is very dear to us. If a person with OCD has an unpleasant thought or image pop into their brain about their eyes it follows that the OCD is really gonna latch onto that for the very reason that you stated. Our eyes are precious to us. If they weren't then the fear of harming them wouldn't disturb us at all.
Make any sense?
I'm willing to bet that there are all sorts of disturbing thoughts and images that people with OCD can just never bring themselves to open up about because to do so might mean that they will be labeled crazy. But opening up is often the only way to get help. It takes tremendous courage to do so.
That's why this forum is so important. This is one place where opening up about your OCD thoughts feels safe.
I'm so thankful for finding this forum.
Sorry for going on. I just want Superman, if he comes back to read any responses, to know he's not alone.
God Bless,
Mitzi

I take zoloft for it, but it doesnt help. i use to see a doctor but not anymore. nothing he did helped me.
I think you should try again. As Gracealone said, we don't diagnose here, but I think it does sound like some variation of OCD. If you weren't seeing a psychiatrist before, you might start there.

Praying for you~

HI Superman,
Ever been taught by your Dr. how to do exposure response therapy with your OCD obsessions?
A good website to visit on this topic can be found at:
www.ocdonline.com
It would be good for both you and your Dad to get with a professional who knows how to apply this type of therapy.
It's helped me tremendously.
Praying for you. This too shall pass.
