  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Well there are more than one.

The first is in Matthew 12:40 and repeated in Matthew 16. The sign of Jonah is the Son of Man in the "heart of the earth," for three days and three nights.

Then in Acts 2:27, and 31. The Lord shall not be abandoned to Hades.

This is where the Lord went in His death, and from where He was resurrected to the Father as the Firstborn from among the dead.

18For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,

This is at least partially where that idea came from. I'm not sure this means He went down there while He was dead though. Maybe someone else has some additional Scriptures in mind.

this is for my mother who recently encountered a man who believes that those in war will get a second chance to chose god or not, if they die while in battle
mother does not believe this, but just wanted to reference the scriptures for herself.

Getting a "second chance" has nothing to do with the period between Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. It sounds like that man either isn't a Christian or does not believe in the Bible (he may take what parts he likes and toss out the rest). But I will not meander on that point.

The "preaching to the spirits" is probably the closest you'll get to Jesus talking to people before His infamous mission. However, I think it would be a tremendous stretch to take that and say that people who die in such-and-such a condition get a second chance.

Hi there!

I have debated "second chance" a few times, and there are no scriptures to support the ideology that anyone has a second chance at salvation after death. If you want information on discussions on second chance, please send me a PM.

As for Christ being in hell/hades, that is debatable also. The scriptures do not state that Christ went to hell during the three days before the resurrection. The Bible simply states that he descended.
