  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My younger brother (about 18) has held on to a view of Nihilism for a few years now, even religiously. When he came home last time, he admitted that he was still Nihilistic. I know about atheists and agnostics. I've researched apologetics and their beliefs just incase I witness to one, but I have no expirence in Nihilism.

I don't know how I can begin to help him. How can I argue truth to someone who doesn't believe in the concept of truth to begin with? :(

Nihilism is a philosophical position which argues that the world, and especially human existence, is without objective meaning, purpose, comprehensible truth, or essential value. Nihilists generally assert some or all of the following: there is no reasonable proof of the existence of a higher ruler or creator, a "true morality" is unknown, and secular ethics are impossible; therefore, life has no truth, and no action is known to be preferable to any other.[1]
Nihilism is often more a charge leveled against a particular idea, movement, or group, than it is an actual philosophical position to which someone overtly subscribes. Movements such as Dadaism as well as Futurism[2] and deconstructionism,[3] among others, have been described by commentators as "nihilist" at various times in various contexts. Often this means or is meant to imply that the beliefs of the accuser are more substantial or truthful, whereas the beliefs of the accused are nihilistic, and thereby comparatively amount to nothing.
Nihilism is also a characteristic that has been ascribed to time periods: for example, Baudrillard and others have called postmodernity a nihilistic epoch,[4] and some Christian theologians and figures of authority have asserted that modernity[3] and postmodernity[5] represent the rejection of God, and therefore are nihilistic.
Prominent philosophers who have written on the subject of nihilism include Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger. Nietzsche described Christianity as a nihilistic religion because it evaded the challenge of finding meaning in earthly life, creating instead a spiritual projection where mortality and suffering were removed instead of transcended. He believed nihilism resulted from the "death of God", and insisted that it was something to be overcome, by returning meaning to a monistic reality. (He sought instead a "pragmatic idealism," in contrast to the prominent influence of Schopenhauer's "cosmic idealism.") Heidegger argued that the term "nihilism has a very specific meaning. What remains unquestioned and forgotten in metaphysics is being; and hence, it is nihilistic,"[6] and that nihilism rested on the reduction of Being to "mere value."[citation needed]

Hey, you should probably post this in the Christian Apologetics forum. You'll get much better responses there.

I'll see if I can help.

Wikipedia says:
Nihilism is a philosophical position which argues that the world, and especially human existence, is without objective meaning, purpose, comprehensible truth, or essential value. Nihilists generally assert some or all of the following: there is no reasonable proof of the existence of a higher ruler or creator, a "true morality" is unknown, and secular ethics are impossible; therefore, life has no truth, and no action is known to be preferable to any other.
I learn something new everyday.

First, it's illogical to say that there is no truth. If one thing isn't true, then its opposite must be true, meaning there is always truth. It may not always possible to know the truth; Nihilists would probably argue that it's impossible to truly know anything. That is, there are only beleifs, because nothing can truly be proven.

I believe that someone who is truly impartial and honestly wants the truth, God will reveal it to them. "Whoever seeks will find." Impartiality is the first step to converting anyone from any religion, so first, ask him, "If there were an objective truth, would you even care about knowing what it is?" I guess I can leave it at that for now and wait to see how he answers that question.

True nihilists don't exist. It's impossible. They declare that everything should be destroyed because there is no purpose for anything. But if there is not a purpose then why should they destroy everything, is that their purpose? Also, nihilists don't exist because if someone is truly a nihilist they would shoot themselves in the head immediately!

as elijahfalling suggested, the nihilistic assertion that there is no truth is self refuting.

Also, by it's definition truth means that which corrilates to reality. In other words, truth is a statement about conditions or objects that exist or did exist. If there is no truth then there is in fact nothing.

From what I understand, nihilists actualy hold to an agnostic view of truth, that we can't know what is true. They add to this that it doesn't matter what is true since there is no objective meaning in reality, only pragmatism (what ever works).

If your brother is true to this (which he might not be) then you might look into agnosticism, pragmatism, and also Nietzsche (very heavy influence on Nihilism).
