  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Greetings Jay,

You may want to punch into Google, the words: "woman and the well" and see what you come up with.

Or you could download a copy of e-sword and read the commentaries provided in it. For a FREE copy for that great Bible and extras go to:

Blessings,

...because you will not "get it" the way you will when you dig for it on your own.

But to help you in a pinch I hope you'll learn from... (better time management and seeking the tutelage of the Holy Spirit are the keys).

Ok. The woman at the well mentioned the differences between the Jewish tradition and the Samaritan tradition of keeping Torah (the Law) basing it on where it is centered (i.e. Temple Mount Jerusalem versus Mount Gerizim in Samaria).

Jesus told her "
Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews." But he revealed to her what the Jews (by and large) did not know: "The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he."

To this "dog" according to Jews of that day, he spoke plainly that he was the Messiah. He did not speak so plainly to those who ought to have figured out who he was: "to whom much is given, much is required."

Observe how he began with an evangelical-esque witness:

John 4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria. 5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. 7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

Jesus went on to speak about the true worshipers:

John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

This was God's intent all along. It was not about Temple Complexes and which city to worship.

You want to see the white's of your professor's eyes? Write how King David and King Solomon misinterpreted whom the following was speaking of:

2 Samuel 7:12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

David and Solomon took that to refer to Solomon. He built God a cold dead stone replica of the tabernacle and God conceded to deal with Israel on that basis** until the true Builder of God's Temple came.

Zechariah 6:12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD: 13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

And the Temple is the people who believe in him (worship him in spirit) and are indwelt by his Spirit: Matthew 16:18, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 1 Peter 2:4-10.

** God did this also with the monarch itself (1 Samuel 8:7-10)

5.The woman at the well is commonly used as a model for counseling and teaching, give supporting details.

Jesus did not judge her for her many indescretions. She was at the well at an hour when most women did not go to the well (read that she was scorned by other women). But Jesus did not snub her. In fact he spoke to her which was not done with Samaritans and even less with Samaritan women for a Jewish rabbi to do. He spoke openly and plainly to her even if using word pictures. She was in effect a prophetic depiction of the Church herself. And he was encouraging to her while not allowing her to escape in her denial / social cover up "I have no husband" when she had had five and was living with her current man friend. Yet Jesus spokle not an unkind word to her.

12.Explain how psychology explains the development of conscience, and whether this is congruent to or in opposition to a faith in God.

Always remember psychology does not address the whole person. We are made up of:

the body (soma)
the spirit (pneuma)
and the soul (psuche)

Psuche / psyche / psychology only addresses the soul. It might help but at best it is incomplete. And it is in opposition to faith in God if it is purported to be a complete treatment or solution to man's ills.

Hope this helps.
