  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How long are the days in Genesis 1? Why?
How old is the earth and life? Why?
Did man and apes share a common ancestor? Why or why not?
Were Adam and Eve real people? Why or why not?

Genesis is a nonhistorical account of early humanity. You might as well ask the precise height of Zeus.
The earth is some five billion years old, because that's what the evidence indicates.
Yes, we evolved. Again, because that is what the evidence indicates.
Eve was likely a prehistoric lunar earth-fertility goddess with a snake consort. Adam was an instrument used by semitic people to subsume this prehistoric mythology into their own, thus delegitimizing the existing matriarchal cultural norms.

(I've been reading Joseph Campbell. And some science.)

How long are the days in Genesis 1?

However long the story writers wanted them to be.

How old is the earth and life? Why?

Earth: Roughly 4.54 billion years. This is based on various geological evidence, especially radiometric dating.

Life: Roughly 3.9 billion years. This is based on geological evidence.

Did man and apes share a common ancestor? Why or why not?

Yes. There are several lines of scientific evidence supporting this view.

Were Adam and Eve real people? Why or why not?

No, since they are creations of myth. The story in Genesis is greatly implausible.

How long are the days in Genesis 1? Why?

The text repeatedly says:
And there was evening and there was morning

Also of interest:
14 And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, [...] 16 God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.

Were Adam and Eve real people? Why or why not?

No, they are certainly no historical persons. A better question might however be: Are Adam and Eve real people? ;)

And as a meta-reply to all questions: If you want scientific answers, either do science yourself, or at least use good sources as a reference. Me, I am hardly such a good source. ;)

:)

The lenght of days in Genesis 1 is not stipulated, therefore it's anyone's guess (or so it seems, but would 0.000000002 seconds actually sound reasonable?)
I am taking a phenomenalist view on life and earth today, so as far as I know they are only as old as me and my memories, which is around 37 years.
As for the common ancestor, thats a question I cannot answer as I have no relevant direct evidence nor memory. Perhaps those times did not even exist as I was not there to witness them.
As for Adam and Eve I have no experience of them, the rest is just ignorable theory.

What, no Last Thursdayism? You're already heading in that direction, and soon you'll be a solipsist.

I'm pretty sure the author saw them as 24 hours.

The age of the earth is 4.54 × 109 years ± 1%, life began around 3.8 billion years ago. Why? Because this is what the evidence points to.

Man and apes share a common ancestor because the evidence points to it.

Adam and Eve were most likely not real people, at least in the literal sense. Humans came about from a large population and didn't start from one couple. If you like you might say Adam and Eve were the first couple to know God. Eve could possibly be Mitochondrial Eve, the woman from whom all living humans today descend. Adam could possibly be Y-chromosomal Adam, the theoretical most recent common ancestor from whom all living people are descended patrilineally. However, if this is the case they weren't a couple in the sense that they lived at the same time.

24 hours, because that's how long a day is.

How old is the earth and life? Why?
4.5 billion years and 3.5 billion years respectively, because that's what the evidence tells us.

Did man and apes share a common ancestor? Why or why not?
Yes, because that's what the evidence tells us.

Were Adam and Eve real people? Why or why not?
Maybe, but the Genesis account is unlikely to be a literal account of actual events.
