Please pray for me....

I am trying out tomorrow for the Praise and Worship team. They asked me yesterday if I sang alto or soprano, I told them soprano (that's the high notes, right?!). I don't know much about singing lingo, I just sing.

I've been praying for God to show me what song to sing. I don't want to go in over my head, but I don't want to limit myself either. Anyone have any suggestions for a smooth try-out song?

Also, I have a problem with phlem deep in my throat sometimes. What's the best way to get rid of it? I thought about drinking a few drinks of water prior to singing, but I wasn't sure if anyone had any tips for that as well. It's like I have a cold all year, and makes me sound "nasally". I DON'T want to sing through my nose!

Thanks so much!!!

I can definatly understand where you are coming from in terms of the parts for singing. I've been on my church's worship team for over a year, and around the year mark, I started singing in addition to my drumming.

Now, I knew that there were "parts" for singing, because I was in a school choir, but I didn't know how they related to contemp. Christian music. So, it was definatly a step to overcome....

What I did was started by just singing the lead part (what the leader is singing, what more than likely you are singing out in the congregation if you are not harmonizing). Eventually, by asking people who were on the team for singing, I learned how to figure out the bass part, and I'm practciing being able to sing that.

I guess the best thing I could advise is talking to someone who sings the part you are trying for. The order, highest to lowest, is:
Soprano -female
Alto-female
Tenor-tends to be male, but both
Baritone-male
Bass-male

So, the best plan is to talk to a soprano in your church, figure out how the soprano parts are marked on the lead sheets the worship team uses, and go from there. Unless there is a soprano who happens to get this thread, and can explain it here! :p (To be honest, I don't tend to sing soprano! LOL)

God bless as you dive into this ministry!
