  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My dog has ticks! We've recently bought some stuff to spray the yard with but don't want to use it until we know we can get the infestation of my baby! We've been using a tick collar (which hasn't helped...probably because we put it on AFTER he got ticks) and Advanced care 3 in 1 drops but that hasn't done much either. He is a Keeshond/Chow mix so he is extremely furry and it is hard to find them. Can a groomer help or some type of pet salon? Will he need to be shaved? Should I contact the vet? They are not deer ticks and from the research I've done the ones in are yard don't transmit Lyme disease, but still I want them gone and off my dog. Any suggestions??

Use a better flea/tick product on your dog. Sprays can work, but tick collars are generally ineffective. I'm also assuming that the Advanced 3 in 1 product you mentioned you purchased at Walmart or some other generic place. Besides being dangerous, they are also not nearly as good as a name brand product. Go out and buy Frontline. You can purchase it online, from your vet, or from large pet stores (Petco, PetsMart, etc.). Frontline is more expensive but works much much better and is totally safe. In the meantime, start pulling ticks! The longer the stay on, the more time they can transmit disease to your dog.

Does the Frontline work on a dog that already has them? That is my concern. We also have seen a special shampoo but aren't sure if that would work either. As for pulling the ticks off, we are doing the best we can, but he is extremely furry and it is difficult to even find his skin, let alone something stuck on it! That is why I was wondering if we should take him to a salon and have them take care of it.

What we use is a spray, I think the kind that we have now is Adams, there are several other kinds that work well too. You can get them at Walmart or a grocery store in the pet isle. The spray is kinda a gel when it comes out, what we do is spray it on the tick then wait a minute and it usually backs out enough so you can gently flick it or pick it off without it getting stuck.

My animals get ticks all the time, my house is set back in 12 acres of woods and I've found that the spray stuff works the best. We usually use a match, which I know you are not supposed to do but it works too.

Shoot! I wish I'd have seen this sooner. Your very best bet is to get Advantage from http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/nsearch?catalog=healthypetscom&query=Advantage&.autodone=http%3A%2F%2Fhealthypets.com%2F
or
www.healthypets.com

Another GREAT natural thing for your yard to prevent ticks and fleas---and even worms from living and reproducing in your grass is Diatomaceous Earth. It's a natural, safe, nontoxic earth--or dirt--that is toxic to the parasites---it breaks up their shells and kills them.Make sure it says that it's FOOD GRADE---not for swimming pool filters. Very cool stuff, and safe for children and pets. You could even run it through his fur after treating him with the Advantage.

I've talked to many breeders about the Frontline and have heard alot of nightmares about it.

I hope all is well with your pup!

Except that the OP states that the dog has ticks. Advantage does nothing for ticks. I have used Frontline on all of my pets for all of their lives and have had no problems. All products have a minimal incidence of adverse reactions. Google "Frontline reactions" and "Advantage reactions" and I guarantee you will find nightmare stories for both. Both are endorsed and sold by veterinarians across the country and are completely safe for use. Often the adverse problems are more due to incorrect use than formulation.
