• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey, this has to do with depression and anxiety. I have just moved to back home, I was gone for a year. I've been back for 5 months, and I haven't been out with friends for 5 months, because I have no friends here and I don't know what to do, I feel like going crazy, besides going to the store and for an odd half-hour walk, I haven't been out of the house for 150-odd days... Any help?

CGL,
Could you expand a little more on what you're going through? I know what it is like being in a city where you have no friends or relatives, and it is very easy to fall into hanging around your apartment or home, especially if there isn't much to do. But this doesn't necessarily mean you have depression. maybe your just bored. I am not trying to make light of your situation, but staying in your house because you don't have friends or anything to do doesn't necessarily mean you have 'depression'.

However, regardless of your situation, being by yourself with no one to go out with can prove to be very lonely. you said you just moved back home, do you not have family or old friends?

In any case, please understand I'd really like to provide any advice i can, but it would be helpful to know a little more. also, i'm not a professional, i'm just another christian on the internet who has depression - so don't diagnose yourself over something that I or anyone on this website writes. Please try and find a good Christian counselor/psychologits if you feel that you have depression.

Finally, i love the Lord with all my heart and am so blessed to have salvation through Jesus Christ. I have been through a lot the last few months and I find it comforting to talk to others and provide any advice when I can. So if you would like to discuss further, please feel free to pm me or just keep posting after this. I truely hope you feel better. God bless

In Christ...

First off, thank you very much for responding.

I have MDD (Major Depression Disorder) I was diagnosed when I was 12, and have been dealing with professionals since I was 9 years old, until just recently, when I was too anxious to meet a new doctor.

However, regardless of your situation, being by yourself with no one to go out with can prove to be very lonely. you said you just moved back home, do you not have family or old friends?
My mom is around. I use to have friends here, then something happened, I went to jail, moved, and now I'm back and I've been shunned, by the community.

In any case, please understand I'd really like to provide any advice i can, but it would be helpful to know a little more. also, i'm not a professional, i'm just another christian on the internet who has depression - so don't diagnose yourself over something that I or anyone on this website writes. I appreciate it.

Do you have anxiety attacks?

The best thing to do is to make yourself get out every day, even if it is only for 30 minutes or so and just taking a walk or something. The longer you stay inside, the harder it becomes to leave. I am a recovered agoraphobic and at times I spent months inside my home. (One time, several years ago, I left my house to go to a doctor's appointment and there literally had been new houses built on my street that I had not seen before.) Maybe you could find a mental health professional who would talk to you on the phone instead of you having to go to their office? I had a therapist that did that with me a few times when I could not get myself to physically go to an appointment.

Or does talking on the phone make you nervous?

Well... I wish I had more helpful things to say, but I've never dealt with anything like this. The only advice I can offer are a few things that worked for my girlfriend, who has a much milder form of depression.

I forget the author of this book, but I bet you could find it on Google. If not, I'll get back to you next week, since I'll be driving down to GA to see her on Saturday. It's called The Power of a Positive Teen, and my gf said it's made a huge difference already.

The other things that worked for us both are to focus on your prayer life. Find something, even something little, to thank God for every day, as many times as you can. The more you're heart is in a place of thankfulness, the better you'll feel about your life. We've both had this one work, and it was recommended to us by people who are experienced in this kind of field.:)

The other suggestion, while arguably not the most affective, is to get some positive music and play it while you're at home or in the car. "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" by Monty Python is one of my favorites for brightening up my mood, but whatever gets you feeling happy is what you should go with.

And stop reading Rush.:p ;) Right or wrong, the guy's the biggest "negative nancy", as a friend put it, since... ummm... I guess I should have thought of someone to put in there, but yeah. Seriously though, positive influence is your best bet for helping yourself along in the non-medical realm.

The positive music thing is actually very effective. So is focusing on a little bit of the Word every day.

I don't listen to sad or angry music any more and I try to avoid depressing or scary movies, as well. I stick with things that are funny or inspiring.

I second this.

All I know is fear is a limits that could stop you from living a full life. Anxiety and fear that you face, your going to have to take it on. Learn how to tackle it. Take it little at a time, much like MCN said.

Stay strong in your prayers and studies. Let wisdom and understanding give you strength to overcome it.

Growth process is slow one. Going to have to overcome personal feelings and might feel bad couple of times. Ultimately the most important part of growth is getting back up and doing it again. Oh small tip, don't always rely on your feelings, you have more control than you realize.

You know life in the home is not living. Use this as fuel to the fire to keep getting back up and conquor your fears.

I understand what you're going thru, I used to suffer from Depression and PTSD. Mental Health Professionals can help, to an extent, but there's deliverance with God. My advice, find a good bible teaching, spirit filled church and pour your heart out to God. He'll heal your mind and your Body. He did it for me. Just trus in His Love!!!
