  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me out. For a class essay we've gotta talk about women in early and medieval churches and the role they played. What I was interested in knowing was if anyone had any references or resources they might be able to point me towards that would help me at least to know of a few women (early is considered 100-450AD and medieval is 450-1400). Any help would be appreciated, thanks. God Bless you all!!

Try Hilda of Whitby, Hildeguard of Bingen (she did a lot more than just write music) and Catherine of Sienna for starters.

Go to http://www.newadvent.org/ for brief biographies.

Then I can just say that during that perion the female deaconate was changed. (Paul recommend Phoebe (Swedish: Febe) a deacon in the parish in Kenkrea, in his letter to the Romans. But that is before Your period.) In the West Church, female deacons came to became nuns in the fourth century, while the male came to be a step towards priesthod. I the East, female deacons were working till about year 1000... It lasted longer there, as the society made more differences betwen men and women, so priests and bishops needed to have female deacons as assistents there...

If You´ll write about nuns, I think that Saint Birgitta/Bridget of Sweden, Patron Saint for Europe, is an interesting person... She lived in the fourteens century...

The following resources may be helpful (especially the introductions):

Bynum, Carolyn Walker. _Holy Feast, Holy Fast_

Cazelles, Brigitte. _The Lady as Saint_

Petroff, Elizabeth Alvilda. _Medieval Women's Visionary Literature_

Millett, Bella and Jocelyn Wogan-Browne, eds. _Medieval English Prose for Women_.

Also look up the life and works of Christine de Pizan, a medieval female author!

thank you all very much for your help, I did have a couple of those names but now I have so much more. If anyone else knows of any, I'm still open to hearing more names or references. Will certainly look up those books and see if I can get access to them, thank you all once again. May God Bless you.
