I plan on going to Michigan State University, but the problem is money. It costs about 20,000$ a year, now my family doesnt make that much and with financial aid and everything I proably will get about 5,000. So how will I come up with the rest of the 15,000? About how much do you guys save during a year from working?....I just dont want to be in debt so if anyone can give some advice it would be much appreciated.

The only things I can suggest is to go onto www.fastweb.com and see if you qualify for scholarships and if your still in highschool you can talk to a career counselor. Also you could consider going to community college for your associates degree. I got my AA in biology at a local community college and financial aid covered all expenses as my family didn't make much. I owe nothing for that degree and now i'm finishing up my bachelors at a 4-year public university. The last option is to take out a private or alternative loan to cover the $15,000 your needing. You'll have to pay that back as soon as you graduate if you get a deferred one but the interest can be a killer. You are probably eligible for a subsidized and/or unsubsidized loan through the government. Those are awarded on a need basis.

Another thing that comes to mind is that depending on your major and GPA, you might qualify for scholarships and grants through some companies. Let's say you wanted to be a teacher, they would reimbursed your college loans if you agreed to a 3 year contract to work in an underprivilege area as an elementary school teacher.

There are so many options. Go to your local library and look in the young adults section, they have plenty of books on how to pay for you college expenses. Get together was an advisor and talk it over with your parents.

There are a number of possibilities. You could get a loan (which would result in debt). You could apply for scholarships and bursaries. You could take a year or so off after high school (and even between years of university) and work to earn money. You could look for a cheaper university to attend. Or some combination of those.

My piece of advice - Canadian universities seem to be cheaper than American ones :)

my advice.. if you have money troubles, dont go for the canadian, yes theyre cheaper, but its nearly impossible to get financial aid up there, americans dont want to give any to you, because youre going to canada, and vice versa for the canadians. fastweb is awesome. another option, is at my school anyways, they have a program to make payments through out the semester, if you canget the cost down enough... thats what i plan to do.

did you use fafsa?? you might qualify for need based grants etc.

also, if you CANT afford this university, but really love it, look into what courses they have on their curriculum for your major, and then go to a communittee college for just the general education courses... then you can transfer to the better school for the courses that count.

lastly... remember that once you graduate, in all likely hood, youll be making a lot more money than you do now.. so a few grand in loans over 10 or so years wont be as hard to pay off as you'd imagine. (i did the math already for my loans, and was suprised how small of a monthly paymenti could potentially have.)

best of luck, and lotsa prayers

oh, and talk to your financial aid office, they might have somemore better ideas, and might know other scholarships to apply for.

another thing... try to go abroad for a semester for more, and when you do, go to a country that is NON TRADITIONAL... ie, china, africa, etc. These places you can get FULL scholarships from a lot of different organizations, and there by cut the cost for that semester. any questions on that either talk to your study abroad office at school, or feel free to email me (i work @ the SA office at my school.)

Teni

ps.. if you are taking a year off (i did this) make sure its fora job that has decent pay, and only do so if 1) its ok with your parents, and they are going to support you while yourdoing it, otherwise you will save NO money and itll all be for naught... and 2) if you are SURE you will go back, it can be hard to get back into routine if you dislike school. i personally loved it and couldnt wiat to get into college.
