Help finding life lessons, not apologetics

Hello!

I am theist looking for help finding good resources for sermons/christian life lessons/help remembering God in everyday life. When I have tried myself I have found excellent apologetics. I have benefited greatly from the apologetics but I would now like to add to this sermons/reflections where belief in God is held a priori. But I have not found any such site/channel/podcast that has been really satisfying. So Im interested in what sites you go to on the internet for this purpose.

I live in a very secular country and have never belonged to a congregation of any kind. So I probably dont know of even the most common places for sermons/lessons in english available on the internet. I would greatly appreciate your help with this.

First, I think you'll find most serious work in books, not online. Particularly work from the liberal point of view. (You show as Unitarian, so I assume you're liberal.) Second, CF readers tend to be conservative. You might try this question in the Liberal subgroup to get responses from them.

A couple of suggestions: almost anything by Anne Lamotte; "When Jesus Came to Harvard", by Harvey Cox. The latter is a walk through the Gospels as presented in his course at Harvard on the ethical implications of the Gospel. In the course of doing this he looks at Christian life and also several other major religions.

I would encourage you to visit TAW, the sub-forum called The Ancient Way, for Orthodox Christians. They seem to be big on podcasts, and their preachers are decidedly different from typical American Evangelicalism. Whether you prefer them or not, it should give a nice contrast.

Also, questions about words (english is not my first language): To me unitarian just means that I do not believe God is a trinity. Does it mean something else? Also, do you mean liberal as in the political view that emphasize individuality? I am not a relativist/postmodernist wich is something I associate with people that are called liberals. I do believe truth exists, I'm just not sure what is true. So I am open to hearing life lessons/sermons from a variety of sources.

Here's an interesting series, covering hermeneutics of Genesis 1. You may not have any need or interest in this area, but a lot of people are confused about the meaning of this, and how to reconcile Faith with science. This guy is good at that:

Creation Ministries International - Creation, Evolution, Apologetics and more!

They produce sermons, some of which get broadcast on the Firstlight TV Network in NZ. I often enjoy watching these, they are very pleasant, genuine and informative, though some of their statements are overly religious for example not to eat pork because there are parasites in the meat when in fact the parasites are in the intestine which the butcher removes anyway. So keep an eye on that, but you can still learn a lot from them. I don't think anyone is perfect, and I think they have quite a few things right that a lot of Christian's could do well to have right too. It's more educational than preachy, which is what I especially like compared to Benny Hinn and his sort of show.

I believe the “Unitarian” icon refers to the Unitarian-Universalist church. This is a fairly liberal denomination.

There’s a set of positions that I think of as liberal.

* The Bible isn’t historically or scientifically accurate
* God may be reached through any religion, and Jesus is one of many good religious teachers
* They tend to reject traditional doctrines such as the Trinity
* They tend to reject traditional ethics, e.g. the idea that you need to be married to have sex

Many Unitarians would hold all of those positions.

“Mainline” Christians are still liberal, but don’t go that far. They would typically say

* The Bible isn’t historically accurate in all details, particularly the early parts such as the creation story. But we still have a pretty good account of Jesus life and teachings.
* God may save members of other religions, but Jesus is the way God really wants us to approach him.
* They generally value the Trinity and other traditional doctrines, but don’t think talk about three persons with one nature is a Biblical way to describe the Trinity.
* Their ethics normally emphasizes treating other people well rather than rules such as who you can have sex with. (This is probably true of truly liberal as well. There are very few Christians, even liberal ones, that think “anything goes.” That’s normally a false accusation.)

These groups call themselves Trinitarian, even though they often don’t accept what Christians in the past called the Trinity, preferring to use more Biblical terminology.

Finally, there are conservative non-Trinitarians. They all tend to hold positions that I would consider unusual. The best examples are Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses and oneness Pentecostals.

The authors I recommended would be considered mainline.

The material is from a Reformed Theology perspective.

I should add that Catholic teaching is rich with adding insight to the Gospels themselves, by way of understanding the culture in which they took place. Notice this is a very qualified segment of teaching; I'm not a fan of most of the rest of what they teach that I've been exposed to.
