RE: If "Hell" is real and all things were made for God's pleasure (Revelation 4:11), is it conceivable that God would get pleasure from seeing those He created (in His own image, no less) endlessly tortured?
. Rev 4:11 . . Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
The KJV's "pleasure" is a bit misleading. The Greek word is thelema (thel'-ay-mah) which means: a determination, a choice (purpose, decree, volition)
Here's a better English translation from the NIV.
"for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."
Here's the same from the NASV.
"because of Thy will they existed, and were created."
And from the official Catholic version.
"for you created all things: because of your will they came to be and were created."
"pleasure" is accurate enough, but ambiguous. It leaves the impression that God derives glee from all the things He created; when in fact, all that passage is saying is that He created all things for Himself, and by Himself, simply because He alone decided to.
Yes, God created Hell, but it was originally intended for dark beings rather than for human beings.
. Mtt 25:41 . . Then he will say to those on his left: Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels.
Surely no one who donates their only son's life towards mankind's betterment can possibly derive pleasure from human suffering.
. John 3:16-18 . . God so cared for the world, that He donated His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.
One of my favorite beatitudes is this one:
.Mtt 5:7 . . Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Jesus wasn't talking about forgiveness in that beatitude. The word for "merciful" is eleemon (el-eh-ay'-mone) which means: compassionate. And the word for "mercy" is eleeo (el-eh-eh'-o) which means: to pity; viz: to be tender, kindhearted, responsive, sympathetic, warm, warmhearted, cordial, and accommodating.
When Jesus felt sorry for a widow's loss of her only son, I have no doubt that God felt sorry for her too. A prime example of mercy in action is the parable of the good Samaritan.
So then, what Jesus is saying is: cruel people those that are thoughtless, unresponsive, and indifferent to their fellow man; those who lack the milk of human kindness will get no sympathy from God whatsoever.
Anyway, the Bible's God is rich in mercy (Eph 2:4).

Since beginning this topic on May 5, 2009, at 5:29pm PDT, almost 1,875 hours have transpired.
Using my original figure of 2,448 condemned Americans per civil day, a total of 191,250 US citizens have been added to the population count of Hell since beginning the topic.
Worldwide, the tally is roughly 4,230,000 and the clock is still running, adding a minimum of 2,256 new arrivals in Hell every sixty minutes.
. Mtt 7:13-14 . . Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
. Mtt 22:14 . . For many are invited, but few are chosen.

RE: Well hey, lets break out the champagne then yeh?
Though I prefer to focus on the negative aspects of Hell, there's a bright side too.
Working with the same facts and figures from msgs #1 and #105, then it's possible that 183,750 adult-age American citizens made it to safety during those 1,875 hours along with 187,500 underage children.
Worldwide, it's possible that 4,065,260 adult-age people made it to safety, along with 4,148,224 underage kids.
There's a couple of difficulties associated with the children.
Number one is: kids don't stay kids forever; no, they mature; and when they do, human nature being what it is, transforms them into grown-up adult sinners.
Number two: the Bible's Jesus said that nobody, no exceptions, can enter the kingdom of God sans a second birth. In point of fact, he testified that a second birth is not an option; no, it's a must.
. John 3:3 . . I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born from above.
. John 3:6-7 . .You should not be perplexed at my saying you must be born again.
The second-birth requirement cannot be waived, not even for children. So then, somewhere along the line those 4,148,224 kids have to undergo a regeneration just as the adults do.
Regeneration is miraculous: it's actually a supernatural act of God that easily qualifies as a re-Genesis because beneficiaries of a second birth are citizens of a new creation, and members of a whole different family of Man.
. 2Cor 5:17 . .If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
. Isa 65:17 . . Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
. 2Pet 3:10-13 . .The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare . .That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth
. Rev 21:1 . .Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away

Webster's defines many as: consisting of, or amounting to, a large but indefinite number
few is defined as: consisting of, or amounting to, only a small number; viz: not many; i.e. some, but indeterminately small in number
According to Webster's then; few means a small percentage, and many means a large percentage; viz: most.
As of 05/05/09 @ 07:51 pm EST, there were approximately 306,362,390 people alive in the USA with a death rate of approximately one every 12 seconds; which amounts to 7,200 American deaths during just one 24-hour day.
Allowing for say, 1/3rd of those 7,200 daily American deaths to be underage children, that would leave 4,800 adult-age Americans crossing over to the other side every day. Giving them the benefit of the doubt by setting the minimum percentage of the many at 51%, would indicate that 2,448 Americans are taken to perdition each day: roughly 102 per hour.
That's a very conservative estimate as The Lord didn't really specify exact percentages to represent the quantities few and many. Just think; by the time Katie Couric completes her half-hour evening report, a bare bones minimum of 51 Americans transfer to the Bible's hell.
Using the ratio of 102 condemned souls per hour per 306,362,390 population: computing the number of condemned souls worldwide from a currently estimated population of 6,777,919,509 rounds out to something like 2,256 new arrivals in Hell every sixty minutes on the clock. Those numbers would fill the new 51,800 seat Yankee Stadium in just under one day, with one hour and two minutes to spare.
Christmas and New Year's are even worse. A study done of 26 years of death certificates shows that coronary fatalities are, on average, 11.9% higher on those days than any other days of the year; with non-heart deaths spiking to 12.2% higher; and believe me folks, the Bible's God makes no exceptions for those holidays; no, none at all. Souls never stop cascading into the dungeons of Hell in an endless stream like chocolate kisses on a Hershey's conveyor belt.
Up to this point, I've only estimated the number of souls transferring to the infernal regions with current population numbers. There are people languishing in the Bible's hell this very moment, even as you read this, who have been there not only since the time of Christ, nor even since the time of the Pyramids, but since the Flood. I won't speculate on how many years that might be, but Egypt's first pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Djoser, was about 4,600 years ago. The damned from Djoser's era have not only spent 4,600 years in the Bible's hell already, but they have another 4,600 yet to go, and another 4,600 years to go after that. Even after existing in the Bible's hell for 100 billion years, people will still have that many more years out ahead of them; and new souls have been pouring in down there during all the years since Djoser.
Note: To date; approximately 4,282 Americans have died in Iraq since the war began March 19, 2003. In that same period of time 2,239 days homeland deaths total approximately 16,120,800. That's a ratio of 3,766 to 1. It appears safer for American soldiers in Iraq than for citizens in the USA.
