• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi, right now we're in the process of getting my 8yo son formally tested. More than one doctor as said he probably has Aspergers, but no diagnosis yet. We've already changed a lot of the ways we communicate with him to help him, but there's still a long way to go. My biggest concern right now is helping his sister to understand why he does the things he does, any tips would be extremely welcome.

Pray. A lot.

My Aspie is 8 1/2 and we went through all of that last year. I won't lie. Getting here has been rough and there have been mornings that all I want to do is pull the covers over my head and cry, but it DOES get better.

What has helped us the most is seeing a counselor. She is mostly there for my special needs son, but we all go as a family so that she can talk with any of us if we need to. He's trying really hard and we've learned how to read his moods better and avoid most problems before they start.

We still have our moments, but I love him just the way he is.

I know from personal experience that it is very difficult to get a child diagnosed as Asperger's. It seems like most doctors prefer ADD or ADHD. I fell victim to this, having been misdiagnosed as ADD. I wasn't correctly diagnosed until I was 16, and even then it was a fight. Even after, it was STILL a fight to get the support services I needed. They let me in, however, under a special category.

Thanks for the encouragment. Unfortunately I've been fighting for my son his whole life. He started being sickly at around 2 months and didn't stop til about 1 1/2 years ago. I had to fight on doc to get him ear tubes after 10 infections in less than a year. Then at 17mos I had to go around him through the state to get him speech because the doc wanted to wait til he was 3 and see if he started on his own. He ended up in speech til he was 5, can't imagine how much longer it would've been if we waited. I've been telling anyone who'd listen for the last 5 years that he's different than other kids, but until now no one has agreed.
