• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hello everyone. I am a 43 year old mother of 2 kids.

My son, who is 22, was admitted to a mental hospital 6 weeks ago with the diagnosis of drug induced psychosis.

He has been having treatment for 6 weeks now..I am not sure what meds he is on, sorry. He has mood swings, although they are not as bad as they were.

The thing that worries me is that he still has delusions, and this is after 6 weeks of medication.

The docs say they still aren't sure what his problem is, the initial psychosis or BP or SZ as a primary.

I am thinking that he has been off drugs for 6 weeks, so surely the psychosis would have gone by now had the initial diagnosis been correct?

I am really at a loss here as (he lives in another country), one day I will phone him and he will seem a bit better, the next he is angry with me because of something he thinks is true, when it isnt. It is so heartbreaking.

Is there any timeline on when things might get better while on meds?
Thank you in advance for your help.

hi! i'm dee *hug*.... each person has their own time line. meds can work sooner than his mental state of mind. the brain is very complex to the mentally ill. thinking has different levels of wich one can be aware of or completely unaware of. this will take time, unless he has a personal 'wake up call' or the doctors can pin point a med that will assist him into recovery. keep seeking support and stay available to adjust your own ways of thinking to 'see' how to help. maybe your son can give the doctors permission to aid you in understanding. one thing is a blessing, is that he is in a hospital with trained individuals to support him, and keep him safe. *hug* the Lord will provide

For me and my mental illness it is a daily struggle, tonight I feel confused like it is hard to think, and I will talk to my doctor about it tomorrow. I think I need some psycho therapy to help me get used to the idea of possibly never marrying in my life and just staying single. It works for a lot of people who get divorced, they just stay single.

About having a delusion, for most people the medications, take the delusion away, with the help of psycho therapy, where the therapist talks to you and tries to reason with the patient. Also, if the delusion won't go away easily, then the thearpist helps the patient to deal with thinking like that. Like don't agree with him, or pretend that the delusion is real, because that just makes it worse.

Sometimes a person has to say that, "I know you think that this is real, but I don't think that, I don't agree with you."

Some people cannot shake their delusional thinking for their whole life, and the thearpist with the help of medication will help the patient to just not think about it. I hope he get's better.

Sincerely,

Thomas

Thank you both so much for the replies:)

I do tell him that it is not true what he's thinking and I stick to it when necessary. (One of his delusions was that I was working as a prostitute, I sure wasn't going to sit on that one!).

Thomas, I am sorry you haven't found a love in your life. I hope you can eventually.

My thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Be patient. Know that when he says things like that, it is the illness, not your son.

I also had drug induced schizophrenia and never told anyone about it. I just kept it all inside. It lasted for a very long time because I wasn't getting help, but now I am better. So never give up hope.

Family support is very important. If you feel comfortable with it, go ahead and research schizophrenia a little bit. It will help you understand what your son is going through. Some may find it disturbing so consider that too.

God Bless!
