  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

... but I am here!

I was raised as a Southern Baptist gal, but have had several bad experiences that caused me to leave the faith for a number of years.

I am not sure what my faith could be called now. There are so many denominations of Christianity that I am not sure which one I would properly fit into. I know I cannot return to being a Baptist due do the things I believe.

This is the first time I've felt confident to even approach religion again, and I hope being on these forums might help me on my way!

Just had to post a reply, KitKat. I grew up Southern Baptist as well and didn't care for it one whit. In fact, my wife and I turned Methodist for about a decade.

We went back to our Southern Baptist roots last year. In fact, we're now very active members in the church where I grew up and didn't like.

God works in mysterious ways.

At any rate, I sincerely hope you find a denomination that works for you. I have a healthy respect for a good number of denominations but it appears I grew up Baptist and that's where I'll stay. However, C.S. Lewis nailed it in "Mere Christianity" -- there are some core beliefs we all share and at least we should all be able to agree on them. I view denominations as far less important than allying with a church where you feel God is working and getting involved in that church.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was raised southern baptist but due to theological disagreements I really ceased to think of myself as a southern baptist at about age 20 though I did not quit going utterly until about age 27.

I am 64 years old now and I am one of the majority "unchurched" in the U.S.

It will be ok. You know god is everywhere, right? lol.
