Let me put things another way.
A person is to be fulfilled in all ways in and by God and His will. A person (in whatever way) will be fulfilled by drugs. Drugs then becomes a God-substitute. Any God-substitute is considered an idol (whether you bow down to it or not). Idolatry is a sin.
Also, God wants us to take care of our bodies becuase He gave them to us. It's his gift to us. To ruin our bodies would be to ruin his gift to us. That's just ingratitude.
Those would be two reasons why I would say doing drugs is a sin. It's not an unforgivable sin, but it's a sin nonetheless.
