do you believe that hell is a physical place? i have read in the bible about the "lake of fire" and i know all about the "morning star" verse about lucifer (which can be interpretet), but as a catholic i believe that hell is more of an existance without god, living in darkness without his light, what are your thoughts on hell?

Your guess is as good as mine. I honestly can say, I don't know.

I would have agreed with you until I read the Bible through. It's pretty consistent - Jesus will hold a final judgment and separate the sheep (his) from the goats and the goats will go to the Lake of Fire which was prepared for Satan. :( So I believe it's a real place and it's not a pretty sight.

I think hell is a physical place. I also agree with you in that hell is a place where God is not. God can't be around sin so he can't be in hell.

There' also the image of being cast out into the darkness where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth. Being cast out would be out of the kingdom--separated from God--and the wailing and gnashing of teeth would come from the torment of existance without any good or love. This would leave someone suffering with a burning, consuming hatred. I think the fire imagery relates more to how it will be experienced than literal fire. I mean, Satan is a purely spiritual being, for example, so literal physical fire wouldn't do much.

Read Luke Chap. 16. The rich man knew he was in hell, and was tormented by this flame.

ttreg,

I agree with you that no one is in hell(lake of fire) as of yet. The unsaved has no conscience, its like a long sleep until when they wake up, each of them will be taking their turns to give an account for their lives. The lake of fire will not consume, they will continue to live an eternity in the lake of fire as Jesus describes for an exampe when he says that the worm dooes not die and the fire cannot be quench.

In the Bible we have today, I seem ot recall Hell as being referred to as both a place, and as a state of being... as in the guilt of your own sins creates for you your own personal hell. But in Revelations, they describe the tribulations as hell on earth, as if hell was place.
I guess we'll all find out when we die, huh?

Let us look at FACTS!

If there was a Hell.... Jesus would be suffering in it.... because he has paid for the Sins of the whole World.... we know Jesus is at the right hand of God.

What fact makes you think Jesus would be damned for our sins?

Rev 1:18
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Scripture from ALL OVER THE BIBLE...... tells us that Jesus has paid for the Sins of the WHOLE World.

In no way can this be denied...... are you saying that Jesus failed in his mission ?

The FACT remains if there was a Hell.... Jesus would be suffering in it because he has paid for the Sins of the Whole world, on the Cross at Calvary.

Jesus is at the right hand of God...... thus the deception of Satan about enternal torment to put people off Christianity is now blown away.

Grace and Peace to you always

1. Jesus didn't go to hell; He went to sheol, the abode of the dead. That isn't the same as hell.
2. The Rich man was in hades, which is a part of sheol. It isn't the same as hell.

1 and 2 are good reasons, by the way, to chuck your KJVs away. But I digress...

3. Hell is a place of pain and anguish, but it isn't physical pain. It is a spiritual pain; perfected bodies can't be hurt.
4. Hell is probably experiencing God's love negatively because of having rejected it.

Let me expound on some of the language being used in this thread. Other Semitic language profs may want to add to my explanation because I am going to be fairly general in my overview of terms.

The Hebrew word "She'ol" can mean anything from "the grave" all the way to refering to "hell." Second, the word "Hades" is the Greek equivalent for the word "hell." The word for "grave" in the Greek is the word taphos. In reading the new Testament and especially the book of Revelation, it seems that we can put together a general doctrine of Hell:

1) Hell is a real place of torment for those who die in a lost condition, but is not the eternal home of the damned. Lk 16

2) At the Great White Throne Judgment described in Revelation 20:11-15, the souls of those in Hell are resurrected to be judged and cast into the Lake of Fire, which the Bible says is the second death. We can't confuse the Lake of Fire with Hell. One is temporary while it seems that the other is eternal.

3) Descriptions from Jesus' account of the rich man and Lazarus in Lk 16 seem to be a real account rather than a parable because in this instance Jesus actually calls one of the characters by name - something He never did in any of His parables. The experience of the rich man was certainly graphic and literal - he was in torment. He even mentions that the source of his torment was "this flame."

Therefore, I can't find any Scriptural evidence to suggest that Hell doesn't exist. That being said, I will say that I have noticed a movement that has been steadily growing which has sought to either get rid of the idea of Hell or at least allegorize it. As far as the reason for this, my guess would be that people in general don't like to think about there being any literal consequences, let alone eternal consequences, to not accepting Christ as Lord. Hope I made sense.

Hell is being in a room full of idiots (saved and unsaved). :sigh:

But as far as your OP goes, you're very right. It's the same as suffering.

Isn't Hell for Christianity because they are the only ones who belive in this type of hell whereas they will be sent there on judgment day if they don't keep the commandments?

Matthew 19:17
And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Revelation 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
