Hey guys,

I'm looking for a little insight on a question I had some time ago. I never really received an answer that I thought was definitive, so I thought I would post the question here and see what you people had to say.

As always, please backup your thoughts with scripture. Thanks!

Hi Adam,

Was hoping you could help me out with a quick question. I've heard two ideas on what happened to Jesus when he died. I've heard people say that he descended to hell and I've heard others say that he descended to the land of the dead...which apparently isn't the same as hell (purgatory?). My understanding is that the answer lies in the translation of the original script. My translation (NIV) uses Hades...AMP takes it one step further and puts in parenthesis the realm of the dead. The NLT says the grave. MSG and KJV say Hell. CEV says the world of the dead. So the first thing that I need to clear up is where did he go? Hell, hades (based on the definition for hades, I'm assuming land of the dead is the same thing) or the grave?

I've tried looking up Hades. I guess the land of the dead is the best definition for it...it sounds like it can contain heaven and hell (depending on how you lived your life)...and of course ruled by hades (if you take the greek standpoint). Anyhow, I've looked at a few different translations and they say that the people rose from the grave...which I wouldn't have thought to associate with Hades but their own tombs...perhaps chained to their own corpse. But the bible states that they were awakened...so I would have to assume that the spirits were "asleep" and therefore there isn't really a land of the dead. However, after reading everything, I think its safe to say that no one has gone to hell at this point...I doubt even Satan has visited his home to be...and that no one will until after they have been judged (which, it sounds like, they hadn't been at that point).

Thanks,

John

Yeah sometimes a picture can bring a tricky doctrine to life. His work is extraordinary. I didn't get it online. I have his complete works on my computer at home. I bought them.

Getting back to the OP:

[bible]Mattew 27: 52[/bible]

[bible]Ephesians 4:9[/bible]

We have these nice handy Bible tags now. I suggest people with Bible questions use them, to help jog people's memories and make it easier to understand and answer questions.

Does everyone here know how to use them?

"Hades" and "the lower parts of the earth" are Greek terms to represent the Hebrew "sheol," meaning the place of the dead, or simply death.

The Nicene Creed says
Nicene Creed said:
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;

The Apostles Creed says:
Apostles Creed said:
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead
or (depending on the translation)
Apostles Creed said:
suffered under Pontius Pilate,*
was crucified, died, and was buried;*
he descended to the dead.*
On the third day he rose again;

I found this short discussion on this line in the Apostles Creed.

These affirmations of scripture and the creeds mean Jesus was really, truly dead. Whatever happens to dead humans happened to Jesus. He did not merely seem to be dead. This was no hoax and no coma, but death. Various words were chosen by various authors to state this emphatically.

Any further explanation is pure speculation.

Christ said exactly where he was going. In fact he brought someone with him. He has most certainly never been in hell.
What about 1 Peter 3:18-22? Don't get me wrong I believe in Him taking the thief with Him to Paradise since it also says that in the Bible.
