on a more personal note
i can say that this doctrine (eternal torture of unbelievers) caused me MUCH BITTER GREIF in my walk with God.
it stumbled me grievously and prevented me growing in the image of Him who loves me.
everytime i was in the company of an unbeliever in the back of my mind was the thought, the evil satanic thought, God is going to torture them forever and ever and it's all your fault christian.
such condemnation resulted in a stunted and warped development which led to a bad witness and much suffering, but He works all things together for good and now i know the Truth and the Truth has set me free.

judgement yes and let it begin at the house of God
refining fire yes let it purge me of all that is not Him
chastisement yes He scourges every son who He receives
but this damnable heresy (eternal torment of unbelievers) let those who preach it repent.
