  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"And throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth"Matt 13:50

"http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Matthew 8.12#footnote0while the sons of the kingdom http://biblia.com/bible/esv/Matthew 8.12#footnote1will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matt 8:12

How can hell be both a place of darkness and a place of fire (which creates light)?

Any language about heaven or hell is symbolical/metaphorical. You can't treat metaphors as if they were uncomplicated descriptions of everyday objects.

I do believe that where outer darkness is used that Scripture refers to the reality that being separated from God is deepest darkness/God is light. Where Scripture adds weeping and gnashing of teeth that does not make it a contradiction b/c hell can be the reality of darkness due to separation and the suffering of hell fires.

If one reads the texts, one notes that in no event is Hell considered a desirable place even to visit, let alone to 'live' there eternally. One also notes the reason the inhabitants are located there is the ignoring of the commands and will of God.

With those thoughts in mind, I have a question: The originator seems so concerned over two different descriptions of a very nasty place? What's the point of the question?

Are you assuming that what will be is limited by our current finite awareness and reality based on what we can see, touch, feel, sense, experience now in this present state?

Our awareness is severely limited at this time, is it not?

"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." ~I Corinthians 13:12

Thank you kindly.

As someone already said, outer darkness is a reference to being absent from God's presence who is light. We know the absence of light is dark and in hell there is NO presence of God, so that is very much outer darkness where weeping and gnashing of teeth occur.
