1 Pet. 3:18-20 & 4:6 as these verses relate to "hell" (which I believe in) and "ultimate reconciliation" (which I don't believe in).

3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

Hi Gary,

As I understand it, "ultimate reconciliation" means that ultimately (in the end, when all is said and done) all humanity will be saved. Some even go so far as to say the devil and demons will even be saved (in the end).

I have heard of that teaching b4. It appeared in this forum sometime ago. To me it was one of the weirdest things I've heard -- that hell isn't really hell/real and that everyone (including Sata) will be saved in the end.

4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

The Message Bible explains this best:

6 Listen to the Message. It was preached to those believers who are now dead, and yet even though they died (just as all people must), they will still get in on the life that God has given in Jesus.

The judgement here is the Adamic curse. ie everyone will die physically, whether he is a believer or not. But for the believer, although he dies a physical/flesh death, his recreated/born again spirit lives on in heaven.

the earlier verse abt Christ preaching to the spirits in prison is another topic altogether, and has to do with Noah's time and the giants. if you want to know what that verse is about, check out:

God bless

Hi Gary and Lee and Andrew,

Gary - Your definition of "ultimate reconciliation" was pretty good.

I am a new guy here at this board....and about 3 years ago I came to understand this view of 'UR'.

There are 1000's of good folks, Christian believers from all over the world, that also accept this view of "ultimate reconciliation" for the final destiny for those who die as lost.

I wouldn't mind discussing it with you all, but I am not sure if this is the right place. I haven't quite figured out what's allow where - and what's not.

I don't believe I am allowed to give a link to my web site, but if you'll click on my profile and then on my web site......it'll get to over 150 web sites that teach UR, with many thousands of Bibles studies about it.

Peace my friends,
Allen.....

I know that UR folks have their way of explaining certain passages that state the eternity aspect of punishment but those explanations never seem to reconcile with me (pun intended).

And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. (Rev. 14:11)

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (Rev. 20:10)
