• Lesson 1 Materials

  1. Right-click on the link above and tell it "save target as..." Choose a file location where you will save the assignment information, and put the zip file there.
  2. Open the zip file, and click on the button to "extract all files." Extract it to the desired directory and delete the zip file itself.
  3. Open the file 1a_heb_abc.pdf and look over it to get an impression of the various letters in the Hebrew alphabet.
  4. Open the file 1b_heb_abc.wma to hear an explanation of the Hebrew alphabet in audio format (Windows Media File).
  5. Open the file 1c_abc_song.wma and repeat the alphabet song until you're comfortable with it. Learn the letters by heart in the right order. Go over the song with file 1a_heb_abc.pdf and associate the order of the letters and their names with the shapes of the letters.
  6. Once you've got a good sense of the letters and their sounds, open files 1d_read_prac.pdf and 1e_read_prac.wma to practice reading Hebrew names.
Post any questions below.

Yep, it's all me. :">
I'll be making more recordings as we go along. Maybe I'll throw a Hebrew song in here or there. Depends on relevance, I guess.
Let me know if you spot anything questionable in the files (typos, etc.). I'll get it fixed quickly.

Looking forward to this study!

Shalom!

Can you give us a little info about yourself, your beliefs, your qualifications to teach etc, things like that. I have not ever seen you around before so would just like to know a bit about the New teacher. :)

I actually uploaded a "personal intro" to my "virtual classroom". Everything that we do on this forum will be mirrored there (so that I can keep the files and information for the future). Check it out:

Blackboard (Hebrew with Yonah)

The personal intro can be found in the Announcements.

To summarize:
• I learned Hebrew in college.
• I can read, speak and write in Hebrew.
• I moved to Israel in 2007, where I now live.
• I am a Jew.
• I would ask that religious arguments be kept away from the study.
• I will also avoid texts that have religious import as far as disagreements between the faiths.

Cool?

Can't wait to get started! :groupray:

Regards,
Yonah

By the way, if anyone wants to record him/herself repeating the names or sounds of the Hebrew alphabet, feel free to upload it somewhere online, send me a link, and I'll critique how you're saying the letters (and words, if you like).

I think it's important that we have an audio component to these lessons. Too often you find biblical Hebrew studies online, and there's never a way to know if the student is saying the words correctly or not.

I just use the Windows Sound Recorder and save the files as WMA (native to Windows Media Player). If you do the same, I'll give your files a listen. Put a link in your student notebook.

I've redone the audio files to make them louder. I hope it helps! Also, I've put all of the files together into one zip file instead of having a ton of downloaded files that might get misplaced. Let me know if you think this was a good idea.

I am plesed to be learning from someone who not only can read, write, speak and teach Hebrew, but also someone who lives in Isreal and is also Jewish.

If you dont mind would you be willing to post some pics of Isreal? I would love to have some for my computer wallpaper.

I know that you said not to put anything about religion in here, but if I may ask this.: can I pm you with some questions about the Jewish Faith? They will be more along of line of Feast Celbrations and Sabbath days..

thanks

G-d Bless

Of course you're always welcome to PM me, and I'll answer as best I can. You are aware that there's a "Messianic Judaism" forum on this site, right? You might get more relevant answers there from people who have a perspective closer to your own. In Judaism, we don't give the festivals (חַגִּים chagim) any kind of predictive value. These are seasons of remembrance and have nothing to do with the future. They're not prophecies. Essentially, I don't know what more I could tell you than what you can find online (perhaps at Jew FAQ or something similar). I guess if you're just interested in my personal observance of holidays and my experience, that's fine.

How are you doing so far with the first lesson and the ABCs?

Hey, guys. I just wanted to let you know that this week I want to put together some kind of supplements for Lesson 1. The basic structure will be something similar to what is found in The First Hebrew Primer and in many other texts that simplify things (there's even a section on it in Weingreen!). It will be something like this:

נָ נַ נִי נֹ נוֹ נֶ נֵ נֵי נֻט נַט נִיט נֶק נֵס סִין
etc.

Of course, there will be an audio file associated with this exercise. It's just important that you get comfortable with reading the Hebrew alphabet smoothly. Don't be embarrassed to spend a lot of time in lesson 1. There's no need to move to lesson 2 until you master the sounds of the alphabet.

I've listened and looked at everything at least once. Right, now I'm listening to the alphabet song as I look at the alphabet page. I'm going to print the two pages out and put them in a notebook. I'll probably do the one worksheet tomorrow after some more practice tonight. Then, I'll put my answers in my notebook.

Great job! I've put together a supplement to be released in the next couple of days. It will be accompanied with an audio file, too. It'll be a good idea to go over them too before we go on to Lesson 2.

In six years, i've learnt the alphabet, about 10-20 words and some vowelpointers.

I tried to learn words but i forget them as soon as i close the glossary.

Did you learn them within a context or just try to memorize a word list?
