I love heavy metal. KoRn, Metallica, Iron Maiden, DragonForce. You name it, I probably like it. But I have a thought everytime I listen to it...

Is it non-christian?

This is probably an age old agument but is it not OK for christians to listen to metal? I always research a new metal band to see if it's satanic but is this enough? Is in non-christian to listen to any sort of metal?

It is absolutely okay for a believer to listen to metal. One thing that I'm sure you've discovered in your search for non-Satanic music is that there are plenty of artists out there that do not write as if sinfulness and depravity were the only things that they've ever known. A large number of Power Metal bands have fantasy-based themes; Death adopted a philosophical point of view in place of their early horror film-inspired lyrics. Even Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast" and Black Sabbath's eponymously titled "Black Sabbath", songs that contain blatant occult or Satanic references, can hardly be said to condone such things. And furthermore, you're likely to get bombarded by far worse filth by just turning on your radio (Katy Perry, anyone?).

During the 1980's, this form of music received unjust criticism and condemnation at the hands of religious radicals and even government committees like the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC). "Heavy metalists" were pigeonholed as young troublemakers with a penchant for black clothing and hard drugs. And while this stereotype is not applied to metal fans as rigidly as it used to be, the stigma of an unsafe genre of music with the potential to harm anyone who listens to it has endured to this day.

When considering questions such as "what should I listen to", I'm always reminded of what Paul speaks of in the 14th chapter of his letter to the Romans (and especially verse 14). Nothing in itself is unclean or sinful, and I'd like to think that includes music. For me it has been a never-ending source of joy and comfort (and a number of other emotions), as well as entertainment. However, as a believer I suppose it's important to exercise caution when deciding what to listen to, whether it be rock, pop, country, or metal. All types of music can be rewarding for the listener, but if you feel convicted not to listen to a particular band or song, then there's nothing wrong with that either. Just be careful not to write off an entire genre of music because of a few "bad eggs" (if we did that, I would have never accepted Christ). There are not only wholesome secular groups, but there is a plethora of Christian artists who play with heart, and give "metal" a new meaning.

The tritone, the interval between the root of a key and a half step below the perfect fifth was deemed "the devil's calling card" by ignorant religious zealots of the dark ages. This interval is used a lot in today's heavy metal music. So yes, it is a sin and you will be sent to the eighth level of hell. Korn is extremely non-Christian. Twisted Transistor is about Jonathan Davis' sister's vibrator, so you do the math. But seriously, if there is a god, do you think he or she really cares what kind of music you listen to?

You're missing the point. If there is a god that was so benevolent and loving do you think he would really care what kind of music you listen to as long as you live a good life and are a good person?

Interesting to note that you capitalized atheist but not god...

I would say that some metal is not ok to listen to (when they directly talk down on God, it is better to not listen imo). I try to listen to christian metal only, but that is impossible for one such as I, who sometimes grows cold and just does not care about doing the right thing but instead follows his heart. I find it hard to believe that all non-christian metal is bad to listen to. I also think some christian music is bad to listen to (for instance, a christian band that sings false teachings).

but I might as well throw out my favorite band, since not many people will ever get a chance to hear about them, since they are trapped inside the box of commonly known bands. the quality of youtube does not do this band justice at all though.

03 Mantric Symptoms - YouTube

3. Symptoms

Breathe in the air that we breathe out, filled with sweet smoke, to sedate your spirit.
You’ve got our word you will feel better. And we all know that’s what it’s all about.

We are the enlightened, high above doctrines, morally independent, liberated from history.

We took the liberty to replace glass with mirrors.
Trust us - soon you will forget about the concept of windows.

Deep down you will miss the view, but you will never know,
as you will be kept busy trying to look like one of us.

Don’t mind meaning, just lift your skirt and entertain us until our eyes hurt.
Escaping silence is what we need, so sing us songs until our ears bleed.

We are the privileged, miserable elite, happily bound with our shackles of choices.
So don’t bother trying to open our eyes, we don’t really want to see it.
We’ve got nothing to say, still you’ll never get away from the noise of our voices.

Don’t mind meaning, just lift your skirt and entertain us until our eyes hurt.
Escaping silence is what we need, so sing us songs until our ears bleed.

We rule the cultures of insight and strength, blinding our children with needles of pleasure.
An era of greatness and wisdom and wealth will soon reach its highlight with egos exploding.

We took the liberty to replace glass with mirrors.
Trust us - soon you will forget about the concept of windows.

11. Dark Passenger
(feat. guest vocals by Ilkka Viitasalo of Benea Reach / ex-Selfmindead)

Vast is the emptiness growing inside, like a black hole sucking me in.
A hollow casket buried deep, no ruin to cling onto.
A destitute room without the comfort of despair, bleaker than the face of a demon.

Dark is the shadowside, weary and cold.
A haunted place where hopelessness grows.
Out of its own accord the earth runs to dust - to dust through my hand.

I’m lost in a haze, found in perpetual sleep.
A near mortal sting, deadlier than a voodoo snake, sings me lullaby.
In this deserted place I welcome you... I welcome you.

I’m lost in a haze, found in perpetual sleep. A near mortal sting sings me lullaby.

A vehicle broken and restored by unconditional love, the body is a vessel of God’s glory.

As if by a chemical trick, I’m sedated with imagery. An elusion of truth and desire.
Incidents I cannot recall, drowned in motion circular.
A familiar dullness, the wheel of the wasteland.

but you can listen to their entire album on their myspace (it is decent quality) http://www.myspace.com/mantric

my version of benevolent and loving God means he cares about everything we do because living a good life consist of everything you do. but sometimes I feel atheist are more blessed than the common christian because if christians look down on others then that just shows how good they really are. and you do not see many atheist turning people away from God as you see christians doing it, when they act like hypocrites and all high and mighty. that's right, i'm calling my own religion out. how dare any christian treat non-believers as they so often do. if the murderers and torturers of the past that called themselves christians are in heaven, I prolly will walk away from heaven and run to hell. i guess that is why my favorite christian band is mantric, because they sing about christian problems sometimes. but I have my own problems that will not help unbelievers.

but all of that just makes the words "only God is good" scream even louder, and that is pretty brutal. mantric is God touched metal, and it is so good.

I only listen to christian music. And thats honestly the way it should be for everyone. Listening to sinful things and putting them into your head is wrong. There is such a thing as Christian Metal (August burns red, and becoming the archetype to name a couple). If they are god praising then its ok.

Except we don't feel that way about other things. We don't hang art on our wall that is only done by Christian artists. Most people who read books, don't only read books by Christian authors. We don't buy our food or products only from stores that are run by Christians.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you aren't a musician. I'm going to assume this because any musician will tell you that you need to listen to a broad range of music and genres in order to improve yourself. For instance, if you want to improve your thrash metal skills, you don't listen to Eternal Decision, you listen to Metallica, Megadeth, or Testament. If you want to learn death metal, you listen to the greats like Lamb of God or Amon Amarth. Having a narrow view on music will greatly hinder your abilities, and your creativity.

I used to be very gun ho about listening to a lot of Christian music. Unfortunately almost no Christian bands are up to par with the secular bands. I hate to say it, but most Christian bands just end up being some sad knock off of another secular band.

I won't even go into defining what makes a band "Christian" or not. I can think of a lot of secular bands that have Christian members, and who sometimes have Christian themed lyrics. Then you have the Christian bands...who don't act like real Christians. Is listening to their stuff any better?

I use to listen to it years ago, most will out grow it. These days I can't listen to it for more then 5 minutes.

If you play metal backwords there's usually a message from satan in there some where, simularily if you play country music backwards everything gets better! The guy gets his girl back, instead of crying they laugh, and instead of a sad ending it's a happy ending :)

Must be new to Christ.
When you "convert" and are "born again", the old music you used to listen to, dosen't attract you anymore. I've lived through this. I can speak like this because this was my life too!

Metallica, Led Zepplin, Van Halen, AC/DC and the like was what I listened to when I was saved. But after a while, it wasn't doing anything for me. My "friends" loved it, but I heard it and thought...what are they singning about.

The music sounds good, but the lyrics grab you and lead you away from Jesus.

Find a genre of Gospel music you can enjoy and listen to that.

Music is the main instrument the devil uses today.

You can fluff this off, or listen to the lyrics of the music you listen to. Is it about picking up girls at the bar (Country), popping a cap in a cop (Rap) or Even so, Come Lord Jesus (Southen Gospel)?

You will live your life according to what you put into your heart.
Be very careful what you feed your soul.

In the end, if it wasn't bothering you, you wouldn't have asked if it was ok.

(not an attack..encouraging you)
