I was talking to a friend (nonchristian) and was trying to explain heaven and hell to her. Heaven I kinda had a hard time with. Hell was a little easier. She's reading this fictional book where a girl dies and goes to heaven, but misses everyone left on earth. So my friend's kinda wondering if people in heaven still miss people on earth and feel saddened by this. Anywayz, got me to thinking. How would you describe heaven and hell. Also, any good scripture for this?

Hrmm... Have you ever seen a Robin Williams movie called "What Dreams May Come"? Aspects of death and the afterlife are explained in that movie. I don't know how realistic they are, obviously, but at least it attempts to clarify the afterlife.
Basically Heaven is a place where love blooms and is abundant. Everything you want to happen in Heaven can happen if you believe it. Everyone is up there working for GOD and doing the best they can to save souls on earth.
Hell is your worst fears realized... It is a place where love can never exist and all there exists is death. Even if souls who go there aren't harmed physically, they're harmed mentally because everything is just dark and bleak. It's just an abyss.

That's my 2c... Be blessed!

I have read the Lovely Bones, I enjoyed it. My heaven would smell like fresh chocolate chip cookies :)

No sadness in Heaven, just peace, love and wisdom. I won't get into my beliefs regarding hell (saved for apologetics ;)) but if I had to describe the two I would say heaven would be filled with all that is good. Hell would be the absence of that.
Ultimately I think describing either would be like trying to desribe the color orange to someone who is blind. Sometimes words just don't seem adequate enough.
Best wishes always

I think that because those in heaven see God right in front of them, always, it is so much easier for them to trust Him and know that He will take care of those left on earth. Besides, time is different for them, they no longer live in time. Compared to eternity, the time left to see their loved ones with them is nothing.

Just some thoughts...

Heaven is absolute perfection.

Hell is seperation from that perfection

Perfection is Jesus Christ

Seperation is torment, weeping, and gnashing of teeth.

Think of what it would be like to have been around Christ when he walked the earth. Now multiply that by the largest amount you can think of.

Can't wait
