  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I second the not laying down after you eat. Don't lay down for at least an hour after you eat. Tums is the only thing that helps me and I'm pretty sure it's harmless to take. Something that helps is sleeping with my head on two pillows, keeping my head elevated helps prevent me from waking up in the middle of the night with that icky feeling. Try that if you haven't already.

My husband gets seriously bad heartburn!!! So I thought I'd share with you what he does to help this...

*not eating soon before he'll sleep

*cutting down on fatty greasy foods, OR even just heavily processed foods.

**What helps him the most is eating lots of raw fresh veggies throughout the day, even minimizing fruits.

***if he's not watching what he's eating and he needs a quick fix during an attack he finds yogurt even better than milk.

I believe heartburn is caused by a buildup of acid in your system, and since he has gout that definitely applies to him... so in addition to the above, he drinks black cherry juice daily and takes a homeopathhic remedy called natrum phosphoricum which is a cell salt that regulates acidity in the body. Check with a local homepath regarding safety for pregnancy, but I've heard of no coutner indications for this one.

Hope something here will help!

Too much water gives me heartburn. :(
Before I developed a taste for Tums, I'd have a small amount of ice cream before bed. I've heard of people just having a spoon of cream.
Elevate the head of your bed (or use 2 pillows).
Eat slowly and chew well.
Snacking in general helps me not get indigestion (opposed to a couple big meals).

Papaya tablets- really do help. However I found nothing prevented, for me , that ninth month heartburn. With my last pregnancy, though- the dose given on the box of baking soda-- was my saving grace. It worked wonders for me, and I didn't suffer heartburn at all after I would take one dose.

Raw almonds are supposed to offer some relief- but I never have found them much help ( other than just tasting good )

I don't know why they are scared. I read on another message board they have aluminum but I read the back of my container and it doesn't say that in the list...

Really the only reason I want to try something different is because tums isn't working anymore.

So far the only thing that helps is a huge glass of really cold milk 2-3 times a day.

I'm curious, why is everyone scared of Tums?

I personally am because I was using them at the beginning of my pregnancy for a few months and by 4 months I got a kidney stone (I've never had one before) which turned into an infection which landed me in the hospital. My doctor told me that taking tums can cause kidney stones. I would have to chew like 2 maybe 3 for them to work, like once or twice a day. The tums along with my prenatal was to much calcium..

O I see. Well I need the extra calcium because my husband has a bone disease due to a vitamin deficiency and if I am having a girl there is a 90% chance that she will have it as well. So I have to make sure I get enough calcium and I don't drink milk at all ever. I'm far past 4 months and so far so good so I guess I won't worry about it. Sorry to hear that happened to you!

I had the same problem once I got past my first trimester, I was taking tums religiously and they just stopped working. I would throw up mylanta or any kind of liquid tummy stuff. I finally found that the best thing that works for me (as wierd as it sounds) is lemon or lime slices. I suck on those and it will usually kick the indigestion down SIGNIFIGANTLY...and to have some sugar free candy to suck on helps big time too! I also eat a bowl of sherbert in the evenings...LOL and that helps too!

Wow.. lemon or lime slices? I'll definitely try that. You'd think that would make it worse cause of the acid in the fruit.. but how I feel sometimes.. I'll try anything.. :D
