• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do you think God doesn't heal depression when we pray and ask Him to?

Hi Lizilla, Welcome to the forums. God doesn't always heal us Lizilla; we see that with people that have cancer and other diseases. But He promises to bring good out of our trials. You may not notice any good at the moment, but God will work it to your good. Keep coming and sharing. Be sure to go to a counselor or therapist, because it's important to talk. You may also need medication. There's a lot of support and love here, but you need real life help if you haven't got it. Praying for you,Tapero

God doesn't heal everything when we ask for it because it's His will. It's not that He is being horrible - He does know best and we grow in our infirmities (and they keep us humble too) and all things do work together for good.

It's hard in the meantime though.

I've asked the same question before and in the last couple years I've learned just how much the advice I was given (almost what I gave you :)) is true.

Use the time to seek God - not because doing it will heal you, but because it's a very helpful thing, and there's no time you need it more than when you're depressed.

Sorry if I didn't phrase that wonderfully, I'm tired but can't sleep and my head's not running at 100%

It's not the whole reason but I think God allows us to go through it because it will make us stronger. I know that sounds all cheesy and cliche but it's true. Someone once said to me that the devil likes to attack those who have the potential for their light to shine the brightest, he said it alot better than me but the point is that we can get through this depression and come out shining a bright and strong light.

You obviously believe that God answers prayers or you wouldn't have asked the question. No one here has the answer that you seek. God must reveal it to you.

The first thing I did after asking a question in prayer like you did was to look in places where God might show me the answer to my question. The first place I looked was my Bible. Many people in the Bible have suffered from depression. Perhaps you might find your answer there. Check out Job, Lamentations 3 & 4, Psalms: 18, 22, 40, 42, 88 for starters.

After that I asked the elders of my church, family & friends to pray for me. Then I went to my pastor, doctor, & a naturopath for help. Still, no answer. Finally I took 5-HTP 300mg/day. I found my answer. Depression was a projection of my former self. My real problem was that I was trusting who I was rather than who God wanted me to be.

Jesus says, "Whoever desires to save one's life will lose it, but whoever loses one's life for my sake will find it" (Luke 9:24).

I will pray for you as you walk on your journey of faith. You may find that the answer God gives you is different than the one I received.

Why do you think God doesn't heal depression when we pray and ask Him to?
Just a guess, but, I think if God healed all the time people that normally wouldn't give Him a 2nd. thought would be flocking to jump on the band wagon because of all they see.
Some would come because their hearts were changed, but also some would come for the fact that they want in on the healing. Their hearts would be there for the physical gain and not for the Love of Christ.
I believe that instead at times he gives us strength to get thru the problem, and not over it. Which in a sense is the same.
You're helped either way, and strengthened in your faith in the process.
Just my guess.
Chuck.

Just a thought...but the little word "saved" in John 3:17, if you take the time to study your Bible, you will find that little word, "sozo" in the Greek language means -- ya ready?-- SALVATION - DELIVERANCE - HEALING.
It's a package deal that has been paid for by the blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus hung on that cross crying out "IT IS FINISHED! and that is what He meant. I have done all I am going to do (for the time) HERE ARE THE TOOLS (The Word) GO AND USE THEM.

What specific kind of depression are we talking about? Is it mild, like you feel blue most days? Do you have serious mood swings up/down? Do you feel very depressed?

I'm a self-taught expert on depression...I can help with solving that, however I cannot answer the portion involving god, as I am not a believer.

I have the type of depression where there are bad mood swings up and down...bipolar disorder...but I've learned that, through a combination of lifestyle changes, medication, and therapy that I can live a productive and happy life.

Chances are that you will not need what I need...because my disorder is severe, and it truly ruined my life, but I have recovered, and I have never been happier for a longer time in my life!

If you do not mind, please be more specific, and I can try to give you advice. Again, I'm no MD, but I have lived with what you have...and there truly is light at the end of the tunnel.

Why do you think God doesn't heal depression when we pray and ask Him to?

Well, sometimes He does. But I think usually He doesn't because He wants us to have the experience. Why?? Because when He gives us the experience we can use it to help others that suffer from depression. Many get so wrapped up in themselves and their depression they lose sight of this and forget to ask God how to use this experience. Don't get me wrong I am not saying those who are stuck are selfish. Depression itself gets people to look at themselves and get stuck. Some need proper meds to be healed of depression. There are various ways healing does come, it is not always done by a snap of the fingers and poof it is gone. Healing usually comes in time and in finding new ways to deal and cope with our depression. For me, my healing comes when I help others.
