  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Matthew 16:27. [KJV]. For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works.
Matthew 16:26. [CLV]. For the Son of Mankind is about to be coming in the glory of His Father, with His messengers, and then He will be paying each in accord with his practice.
My best rendering of the interlinear.....
Shall for who the Son of man comes in whose glory which the Father his with whose angels his and then reward everyone according to which works are His.
The King James, and most other translations suggest that there will be reward according to our own works. More likely, if it is our own work, there will be judgment. The interlinear suggests that the reward will be in accordance with His works, done in us and through us. A significant distinction.

1 Corinthians 3:10-15.
KJV.
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For no other foundation can someone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abides which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

CLV.
According to the grace of God which is being granted to me, as a wise foreman I lay a foundation, yet another is building on it. Yet let each one beware how he is building on it." 11 For other foundation can no one lay beside that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." 12 Now if anyone is building on this foundation gold and silver, precious stones, wood, grass, straw, 13 each one's work will become apparent, for the day will make it evident, for it is being revealed by fire. And the fire, it will be testing each one's work - what kind it is." 14 If anyone's work will be remaining which he builds on it, he will get wages." 15 If anyone's work shall be burned up, he will forfeit it, yet he shall be saved, yet thus, as through fire."

Fairly consistent.

My best rendering of the interlinear, which I have no doubt is wanting.

It's just like the famous continuation of Ephesians 2:8-9 (that challenging verse 10).

Christ gave us a complete teaching in the Gospel of John that can help us understand this hard to understand verse 10 in that most well known summary of all of them about our own works (without Him) profiting nothing:

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2 ESV

Our own works are not gain....yet we hear we are created in Christ Jesus for good works which God has prepared for us beforehand that we should do them!

And so wondering how one does these good works God has prepared that we should do, then John chapter 15 came right to mind, and we can hear (if we listen!) our Lord explain fully and totally exactly how we can do the works God as prepared for us --

John 15 ESV

-------

So, for me, a powerful metaphor comes to mind: we are all children of God, and just like a small child (the only way anyone can ever enter heaven no less: beginning of Matthew chapter 18 and in the middle of Matthew chapter 19), we are to follow our Parent and rely on Him.

Without a true parent/shepherd, a small child would starve, or be attacked by beasts such as wolves, or taken by a thief into slavery.

But a small child who is not yet rebellious will trust their Parent, and willingly takes the Parent's hand, and walks with their own legs to follow the parent, without refusing to walk (usually!).

We don't want to be like a small child that throws and tantrum and refuses to walk with their own legs.

But instead, trusting Him, we willingly follow Him, and if we remain on the one and only true Vine, then we can.
