  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am having a lot of trouble.

I used to be a Baptist, but now I am seeking the right church. I have been going to my mother's church (pentecostal) off and on for a few weeks now and I love the family-like atmosphere, but I can't wrap my heart around the thought of just one tiny thing.

Baptists are taught (from the jump) that anyone speaking in tongues has been possessed by Satan. It's just not something that I'm really used to hearing.

A lady in church last Sunday all of a sudden jumped up and started screaming in some archaic language and running around the room. I was so scared I screamed and ran out of church.

I love the people in this church and they treat me like I'm family, but what happens if I never am able to get over this?

Have you ever seen the movie "Saved"? there was a part in there where one of the girls got up and started frantically speaking in tongues (even though she was faking.)

Tongues as far as I know are an archaic language that those who are possessed by the devil (in some faiths) or filled with the spirit of God (in others) speak, generally during services. Its a language in which no one on this earth can understand or attempt to decipher, due to the fact that its a holy or demonic (whichever way you are taught to look at it) possession.

just a thought, since they treat ya like family maybe you should b that to them, showing the Jesus in you towards them, watt you have learned from Jesus.
hope that helps :)

Pray. Ask Jesus to show you what He wants you to learn. He doesn't want to scare you away. Knock and the door will be opened. :)

Blessings

Apparently I'm a magnet for vague answers.

I need something I can use. I have been praying every night, but I can't seem to get over this fear.

NO, NO, NO,.. I DON'T WANT YOU TO BE IGNORANT OF THESE THINGS!

"These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;
(Mark 16:17 NAS)

(1 COR 12 NAS)(emphasis is mine)
1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware. 2You know that when you were pagans, you were led astray to the mute idols, however you were led.
3Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.
6There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.
7But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
8For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
9to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
10and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
11But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
12For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
13For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
14For the body is not one member, but many.
15If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
16And if the ear says, "Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.

IN MY OPINION, *IF* YOU BELIEVE THE BIBLE IS WHOLLY TRUE, YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THESE VERSES, AS WELL!

I agree. Speaking in tongues is biblical if there is an interpreter. Good post.

I am having a lot of trouble.

Speaking in tongues. I hate that so much confusion has been brought on because of this touchy issue.

My advice is this: Don't view yourself as a former Baptist or a current Baptist or a future Pentecostal. View yourself as a 21st century follower of Jesus, every other title is secondary to the importance of your commitment to Christ.

I personally do practice speaking in tongues and am a huge supporter of the 9 gifts of the Spirit found in 1 Corinthians chaps. 12-14. However I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of Pentecostalism and terrible abuses and imitations of these precious gifts.

Anyways...even if I didn't speak in tongues I hope that this would be my advice to you. When selecting a local church we must go where we feel that God wants us. Where God wants has a lot to do with true doctrinal issues, however that's not the only factor. I attend a Pentecostal church that I disagree with very strongly on certain points of doctrine, but despite that I feel with everything that is within me that it is there that God wants me and there that I need to be.

Agreeing with a Church's statement of faith is not the most important, being where God wants you is.

I pray that everything works out for you.
